Whats with all the 2.35:1 and 2.4:1 movies

I picked up three HD-DVD's so far... Transformers, V for Vendetta and 300. As much as I appreciate the director giving the ultrawidescreen for his/her true vision, I cant help but feel disappointed that the image dosen't fill my 46" DLP.

Am I alone in this regard?

Nope, you're not alone. I helped my bro's father-in-law setup a new 61" RP HDTV last year and we fired up one of the Spider-man movies...only to see huge black bars. He was freaking out because he couldn't understand why he spend all that $$$ on a widescreen TV only to have black bars just like a 4:3 TV. I showed him the zoom function and he was happy, but it's like doing pan and scan...you can have the full image or part of the image...it's dumb. The industry should have more unified standards...you know...like a single HD disc format ;)

I hate it too. I thought widescreen TVs would solve this problem once and for all but noooooooooo.

they had been using 2.4 and around that for quite awhile before 16x9 tv's came around. Just think, we could still have 4x3 tv's and have 2.4 aspect ratio movies. ;)
I too wish we didn't have black space, but I can deal with director's intent.

they never standardized anything. the directors all wanted their own aspect ratios, so they got it. its basically pure bullshit, because they still shoot the movie with the knowledge that the sides will likely be cut off by whatever tv its displayed on, so why put it on the dvd like that?

I don't mind it since my screen is large enough that it's going to be huge no matter what aspect ratio it is. I have my masking system to avoid the "black bars" distraction, so I'm happy.

What does bother me is when I go to an actual movie theater and they've fvcked up their own masking system and I can see the movie is not matching up with the actual screen. One of the last times I went to see a movie (a rare occasion now), the left side of the image was a full 6-8 feet farther than the screen went, which was really distracting :(

You shouldn't be seeing HUGE black bars. with a 2.35 movie on a 16x9 screen they are slight. Check to make sure you DVD player and TV are setup correctly - dvd player set to 16x9 and TV set to not do any stretching/zooming.

uh...only if the person buys the full screen version or decides to zoom in themselves...

And this is THE only way to enjoy scope films. Don't hate the game, hate the player. :p

for theaters, just go ask any employee to get that fixed. At the theater I worked at, some screens would have more than one film showing, depending on the show time (4pm show would be one movie, the 7pm show could be a different movie), and due to that, sometimes the booth manager would forget to change the projector setup. So, a movie could look completely screwed up. If someone approached me, all I had to do was call over the radio to the manager and it would get fixed. :)
of course, it was kind of funny because all of our screens, the movie image would actually reach maybe an inch above and below, and sometimes that bottom inch or two would show what was at the top of the frame previously. nobody ever noticed, but I thought it would be a little distracting.

Instead of complaining, I put it on my list of things that I don't like about actually going to the theater so I have more justification for my own HT. :p

sometimes I like watching movies at home on my setup. you don't deal with people snickering and making jokes about characters. My most memorable one is from the lord of the rings movies. I think it was during the two towers. Some immature person says "they're gay" and you hear half their row just laughing. It was a serious moment in the movie and it was just very distracting. I'd rather be able to watch my movies quietly.

I just can't enjoy a movie with people talking and making noise. At home I have no distractions and arguably better sound/picture. I don't think any theater uses TrueHD do they? Lets not forget the before mentioned projector issues.

some movies are more enjoyable in theaters due to the impact of the sound. Who knows what sound quality they are using, but the bass absolutely trumps my paradigm sub. Transformers in the theater was insanely awesome. Picture quality was crap in the night scenes (very grainy), but still enjoyable due to screen size and rumbling.
Not having a projector of my own that can make a big screen, the awesomeness of the home theater is not as good. I absolutely want a big theater.. some day. :)

I prefer my blacks to be black on a normal HDTV. Sure my sub isn't as big, but generally things seem more clear at home. Not so much in your face and all at once as some theaters. It does depend on the movie though.

I dunno, what HDTV do you have that has normal blacks? I severely miss the blacks of my non-HD CRT I had prior to my LCD. Sure, you could have plasma or something, but they still don't hold a candle to CRTs in terms of accurate black levels.

I operate a 995 seat theater and can give you a good idea what is used. ;) Our power amps will draw as much as a city block if needed. :D

The screen was like that when I saw Underdog at some crappy theatre in NJ. It was pretty annoying but I was watching Underdog so it wasn't too big of a deal.

This thread has justified my personal anger toward the same problem. It frustrates the hell out of me to pop in a brand new HD movie on a widescreen HD set just to see black bars.

I really don't understand what the big deal is....so its wider than your new widescreen TV...who cares? Maybe if your TV(LCDs mainly) can't display a good true black I could understand....

This is pretty much how I feel. Heck, I was watching 2:35 movies on an old 32" CRT 4:3 TV before I got my widescreen. Talk about black bars!

Wider movies just seem more movie-like, for lack of a better term, to me. I had made mattes at one time that I placed on my TV so I couldn't see the black bars. It looked nice but I got tired of doing that. The bars just don't bother me much. To each his own.

If the movie calls for it, I have no problem with the wide aspect ratio.

Hell, I was buying widescreen edition VHS for the few flicks that offered it--and was quite content with them on my 19" Magnavox back in the day :)

I'm just glad that DVD brought 2.35:1 into more standard use; hopefully cropping and Pan & Scan will be completely eliminated with HD media.
