Why is every movie now released into widescreen format when 95% of people do not have a widescreen tv?

becuase it was widescreen in the theater?

plus, widescreen is better - even when letterboxed on regular tv.

Widescreen is the future. Better resolution, more pixels, more information-usually HDTV ready. Also all movies are filmed in widescreen format as HardcoreRobot pointed out.

Because the OAR of movies is some sort of widescreen ratio, usually close to 16:9.

Even if they have 4:3 tv sets they still don't want to be missing parts of the scene.

why can't they film it in both though? Who cares about seeing the whole picture when you've got 2 big ass black bars on your screen.

In a few years when you buy a widescreen TV you won't have to upgrade your DVD collection.

Who cares? Most of us. If you don't like it, buy the freakin' fullscreen version..or just zoom in on your DVD player.

Because every new TV will soon be widescreen. TV broadcasts will soon be all widescreen.

Don't think of it as 2 big black bars.. think of it as a couple inches of extra stuff you see in the movie!

why don't you just get some masking tape and tape off the part of your screen where the black bars are

because the director intended you to see the part between the black bars, not a subset (for pan n' scan) or a superset (for full frame)
