I know it is called 'posterization' but I'm not sure what can be done about it.

I get it on my 2010 Sammy plasma sometimes on white backgrounds within a few minutes of turning it on. It goes away shortly after though.

something seems wrong if thats what you are actually seeing. I have a VT60 and have never seen something like that

Honestly I think it is the source material maybe. I have seen that happen on really compressed sources (aka Netflix).

Does it do it with a Blu Ray?

That;'s not compression, that is more like crushed black levels. Compression would show up as tiny segments of vertical and or horizontal lines commonly seen around the edges of things.

One would typically determine if it is the television or not by finding another source, such as using a Blu-ray player and a good quality movie. If it looks better using that video chain then you know it probably isn't the TV.

Also what video transport are you using? If that 'supposed' to be HD? Do you know if the source of the material is actually sending HD? etc.^3

yea the compression from Cable/Sat can be nasty at times, Glad its not the TV.

i don't notice it often on cable, i used to more a few years ago, but i really don't watch that much TV

I have Directv, and never saw anything like that. What channel were you watching? Do you have Dtv or Dish network. The OP says Dish.

It will show up on higher quality TVs with DirecTV on many movie channels that are heavily compressed. If you have a shitty TV, it's not an issue. 😀

I have a 60" sharp elite, not the best, but not bad. I have an HD antenna that I stopped using, because dtv quality was on the same level as what got ota. In this area, the local stations have added many bs channels to their hd bandwidth, so hd is no where as good as it once was. I'm sure it's the same in your area too.

My question to you is when is the last time you saw a directv picture?
