Bought an AMD 1.4Ghz Tbird CPU when it first hit the shelves... Plugged her in, prep-arctic silver-seat fan etc. plugged in the comp and turned it on. 15 seconds later *POP* and the unmistakable smell of burnt electrical permeated the room. I'd forgotten to plug the CPU fan in :(.

AMD took pity on me in my ignorance sent me a replacement 1.2Ghz CPU at no charge. So, down .2Ghz but I could have been out a CPU altogether.

I was trying to put on a heatsink which was a complete pain to install because the clips were way too tight. After a few attempts, I got frustrated and used quite a lot of force to try to fit the clip. A slip of hand and the screwdriver took a jab at the motherboarrd. I think a few electrical traces near the socket was broken. :(

Also fried a CD drive when the molex somehow shorted it. Sparks flew and I was pretty scared.

Other than that, I've been pretty careful!

Back in the day, I had a bunch of 486 systems, thinking more was better I popped all the bios chips out and put them all in one board, it didn't boot needless to say and I never did figure out which ones went where after that.

Put all my executables in an "EXE" folder.

Put all my dynamic link libraries in a "DLL" folder.

Put all my cabinet files in a "CAB" folder.

Put every type of file in it's own folder.

Rebooted.

File Not Found.

Ended up having to format the drive, and reinstalled windows 3.1 off of some 5.25" disks.

Real fun

I put a screensaver password on my computer when I was drunk for some reason. Needless to say I wasn't happy when it took me three hours (and a lot of swearing) to reset it the next day.

Dad's company made a deal with me to trade my old Dell monitor for a new flatscreen one, with like only 30$ down on my side. I grab it, haul the box to the top of the stairs, leave it there to clear off my floor, I heard the closet door open (right next to the stairs), then scremed "sh!t!" as the monitor tumbled down.

Learned my lesson.

When I was like 12, I had a 3 gigabyte hard drive that kept getting full...So, naturally, I tried to free up space and ended up deleting important Windows .DLL files...That was not fun - So many bad sectors on the hard drive that I threw it away...

tried to hot swap a 4 pin molex connector into a IDE hard drive to save time from a reboot, lol. hard drive started smoking and had that burnt smell.

while trying to test an athlon CPU on a motherboard to just see if it would boot, i tried to save time by not clipping the hsf on the socket clips and just use my hand to press down to apply force. it didn't boot so i tried another CPU same method. that also didn't boot. looked at the bottom of the first CPU, black and burnt. looked at the second, also black and burnt :(

moral of the story. never try to skip steps to save time.

Great thread, and I have a good one to contribute..

(about 3 years ago now) I had just bought all the parts for this kick ass system (800mhz) and I got it all together and it ran superb.
:Start
I left the room and when I came back I found that it had JUST rebooted (as in I could see the bios check). I thought it was weird, I wondered if it was overheating or something. So I let it boot, then I sat there and threw every benchmark I could at it and I could never get it to overheat or reboot or anything, it just ran perfect. So I decided it must have been a fluke. I left the room and watch some tv and about an hour later I came back into my room to find that it was rebooting again!!! At this point I was pissed off and I turned it off for the night.

Day two: Goto Start. (did everything again, with the EXACT same results)
Day 3 - Day 6: Goto Start (did everything agian, with the EXACT same results)

At this point I had put a week in this, and could not get anywhere. I decided to claim defeat and asked about it here on AT forums. I got about 30 responses, check this, check that, which I did and everything seemed fine.. Then the most important post I think I have ever read showed up.. "Is the socket that it is plugged in to wired to the light switch?" MOTHERF(*&$WE*&%)#($*%&(*$&@!!!!!! Yes, yes it was. Everytime I left the room I turned the light off (and the computer) and when I came back in I switched it back on.

LOL.

That one is hilarious!!! That is so something I would do.

Once, when I worked at a computer store, I had some enthusiast kid come in asking what he should order to 'overclock'. He told me he heard about the Celeron 366 running at 550mhz. So, I agreed to oversee him building the computer and overclocking it to make sure he didn't screw anything up. I recommended an Abit BE6-II and he ordered it as well as the celeron. Well, he built the thing in front of me (while I troubleshooted other computers) and I saw that he didn't mess anything up.

Well, it didn't boot. So he and I spent an hour or two trying to figure out what was wrong. The computer would turn on, but the video would not show up. I opened up a video card we had on the shelf to try it and it didn't work either. I tried new ram, a new hard drive, new everything... I tried everything I could think of. So, I decided to RMA it. The kid, obviously excited about finally having a new 'gaming' computer, was almost heartbroken that we had to RMA the board. I told him that's just how it happens - every once in a while a new board is bad.

Well, a week later, he got the new board and brought it into the store. I proceeded to supervise him installing everything. He did it perfectly (though this was the first computer he built). It didn't boot. He looked at me and looked like he was about to cry. I felt for him.

So, I told him I would troubleshoot it myself while he watched. I tried a few things for about 15 minutes.. Then, I switched the power supply from 220 to 115 volts.. When it booted, he and I both looked at each other like 'omfg.. we're idiots!'

He became a regular customer, though. :p

When I was 13 I was under the impression that my 3.1GB IDE drive was hot pluggable.

It wasn't.

Back when the Internet was mostly dail-up and ISPs charged by the minute, used to think one penny a minute thats nothing. So I stayed online for long periods downloading, chatting and surfing the web. The quarterly bill ended up around £250 (maybe a little more I think), in saying that I didn't over use it the following quarter.

I wanted to test if my new Athlon was installed properly before putting on my new watercooling rig so I tried booting before putting the waterblock on. Well I was in the BIOS and it started smelling like somethign was burning so I though the CPU temp was rising too fast so I panicked and threw the glass of water I had for the watercooling at the CPU. It didn't boot any more afterwards :(

I thought it was a pitcher of water.....

Well, it's not my story so it may have been a pitcher of water. I remember teh guy that wrote the thread had the handle "DocSmarts" and one of the mods changed it to "DocDumb@ss" that was classic.
