I remember when I was like 12, I convinced my dad to buy a 100-pack of CDRW's for like $80, but I didn't know you needed a CD Burner. I opened it, started putting CD's in and kept dragging files to it, wondering why it wasn't working  I don't think the store accepted my excuse either.

I wanted to test if my new Athlon was installed properly before putting on my new watercooling rig so I tried booting before putting the waterblock on. Well I was in the BIOS and it started smelling like somethign was burning so I though the CPU temp was rising too fast so I panicked and threw the glass of water I had for the watercooling at the CPU. It didn't boot any more afterwards :(

I sat a speaker with a nice big magnet on top of a hard drive while it was in the process of booting the system. Needless to say it did not complete the boot.

I was putting together my current computer and had everything plugged in but it wouldnt turn on. So, I went thru all the normal troubleshooting avenues, but still nothing. I took it out of the case because I thought it was grounding out, but still nothing. Turns out I had plugged in the POWER LED, and not the actual POWER. D'oh! I plugged in the correct one and, well, here I am.

On a side note, has anyone actually every destroyed any computer hardware thru static electricity by just touching it?

I had forgotten to set the option in VB6 to save files before running. Then after writing about 200 lines of code, I clicked run, not realizing that I had inadvertently written an infinite loop. Only choice was to ctrl-alt-del, kill the thing, and lose all my work.

sucks when that happens.. 200 lines of code.. wow. hopefully you were in the zone and rewrote them quickly.

Later, i found out that control-break can stop the application running and save you. If only i had known that way back when.. lol

It was my first computer and about half the time the floppy drive would not work. A family friend pointed out that I was putting the floppy in upside down.

Use air compressor to spray air and dust my components, but as air compresses...water vapor condenses and forms liquid water. Needless t o say it didn't boot but luckily it was only the PSU and Mobo.

LOL, well, I was in the zone until that happened. Kinda killed the momentum.

OMG, I just tested control-break. I can't believe I didn't know that. I've only been programming VB6 for 4 years now.

But I've also had it happen when executing has caused a weird error that crashed the IDE. So to be safe, I just set it to save every time you execute.

Best thread in a while...

Two things:

When I first got into computers back when I was in 6th or 7th grade, I wanted to upgrade the RAM on my PC. My friend told me electric shock could kill the whole computer, so before installing the RAM I put on rubber gloves as if I were performing surgery.

Second, and more painful, a few years later I upgraded the video card. I saw how dusty the motherboard was so I decided to clean it all with some compressed air. Everything went well until I turned the can upside down and sprayed the mobo with freezing liquid.

Good times.

good thread indeed.

Only good thing i can think of is repeatedly running 'install.bat' programs back in win3.1/aol warez days and it would deltree windows. i think that happened 2 or 3 times when i was 11

Gave him a nasty shock, and the honor of explaining to the owner what happened to thier P-Pro.
