What's the signifigance of the hole in the middle of a donut?

my brother cooked the donuts for a couple years though.

If they left them on the rod they could just roll them in the sugar, then give the rod a quick overhead snap, effectively delivering them to the masses.
I know I'd stand in a crowd to get a chance at a hot flung donut.

see, you could have had a career as a marketing director for Krispy Kreme. it's not enough to get them hot & fresh off the line - they need to be smacking you in the FACE with the hotness & freshness. i don't even want to step into a donut shop unless i'm getting hot donut in the eye.

nope.

After some consideration, I think a hot glazed donut in the face and a bowl of beans would be infinately better.

It stems from the latin for the word "donut" which is comprised of 2 words.

doooey = a complete circle of batter or other dough like substance
naught = not a complete circle (i.e. a hole in it)

Put them together and you get doooeynaught = donut.

You are correct. Without the the hole, the dough wouldn't cook evenly. The center would still be mushy when the outside was burned to a crisp.

You are correct. Without the the hole, the dough wouldn't cook evenly. The center would still be mushy when the outside was burned to a crisp.

My Grandma used to make donuts out of poppin fresh doughboy pillsbury dough.
She fried them in skanky old grease in a frying pan, threw them in a paper bag with sugar and cinnamon and shook them up.
We'd stuff our grubby little paws right in the bag to get at them, they never hit a plate.
They ruled all donuts by a longshot.
