The AT Mods response: We don't have to be fair, we're dictators of a dictatorship, we'll ban who we want, when we want, even if there is no basis.

There's nothing we can do except express our dislike for the situation, and in turn get banned ourselves.

Well if you do get banned, i doubt it would be because of your dislike of the situation and more because of your offensive behavior during this period. Taking this a little too serious aren't you?

No, just pushing to see how far I can push. I haven't been banned yet, and I want to test the waters.
Careful...the water is full of sharks. Hungry sharks with an itchy ban fin.

'Itchy ban fin', LMFAO :D

Won't happen. It would kill Anandtech as a whole. For the most part the main page isn't 1/8 of what is used to be. I can remember a time when reviews were updated daily....now it can be weeks between new reviews.
Oh obviously, it's just the sheer comedic value of a moderator actually posting such a statement. See M4H's reply below for a more accurate quote of what was written. :)

Thats the problem. This ISN'T something new, and this ban was for something important. If you want to be a homophobe, mysoginist, racist, etc... thats your perogative -- but you should be keeping it to yourself while you're here, or at least thats my understanding of the rules. Am I wrong?

However, the homophobes seem to be getting away with it, and Millenium got banned for pointing it out. That's just messed up. Further fueling the fire is the fact that they refuse to acknowledge the situation, lock threads, and threaten vacations. Its just wrong, its disrespectful to the community. It might be 'their' forums and they may have the right to squelch whatever speech they want, that doesn't change the fact that its wrong.

No, Millenium got banned for putting racial slurs in a post. Yes, he was addressing the homophobe comment, but he could have done so without the racial slurs. He could have also posted the original comment he made of the original post without such hateful words as well. Seems like there's a pattern here, and perhaps it's about time the mod are taking actions like these. /applaud

Actually, I do. I've even spoken on the phone with him and found him to be a very likable guy. Sure, he had quite the temper here on the boards, and that's obviously what got him banned, but I (among others) think that the ban was unfair.
I don't expect fairness in this life, but I will call out unfairness when I see it.

edit: just another comment. I have my own opinions about why this double-standard is in place, and I think it obviously has to do with the commercial aspects of this BBS, and the rules which the advertisers place upon the BBS providers. If that is the case, I can understand why Millenium was banned, but then I think that Felix should have been banned as well. Just my $0.02

That just further points out the double standard. FelixDeKat called Millenium a i love you and nothing was done to him. Yet when Millenium pointed out that people can get away with calling someone a i love you, queer etc....but not get away with posting a racial slur he was banned. Seems that in fairness if Millenium was to be banned then FelixDeKat should have been as well. In realtiy what FelixDeKat did was actually worse since he used a slur to attack someone.

Are people really that surprised that racial slurs are taken more serious than homophobic comments? People have been using words like 'gay' in a negative connation thousands of times on here, and you don't see the mods taking action.

Okay, point taken. However, he did post a topic about it that wasn't nearly as inflammatory. Furthermore, that still doesn't excuse the fact that Moderators are supposed to moderate, or keep the peace. It also doesn't excuse the double standard.

Why don't we have ONE moderator liazon or something that can respond to concerns like this, PUBLICLY, without hiding their identity? Is it so difficult to give the community an explanation, or are they too high on themselves and feel that it's beneath them to respond to us with anything but smartass comments when we get banned? If we had someone on here to actually respond to threads and get into discussions with the whole OT community, I think this whole situation would have been avoided. Millenium felt he had to act out to get his point across, because the mods don't act like they give a crap about anything here unless they're banning someone.

On a final note, you act as if we've never heard the racial slurs before. If there is anyone here who can't view something like that within context and get over the fact that OMG!!!111 HE SAID A BAD WORD!!!, why should the whole community have to cater to them? They're the lowest common denominator, imnsho.

So just because its been going on for a long time now, that means its okay? A lot of people used that same argument when the civil rights movement tried to end segregation.

Words are words, and they only become hateful and vulgar when they are directed at someone or something. When simply put into a list, they remain words and aren't an offense. If they offend you in said manner, you are oversensitive.

Where the hell did i say it was alright? I just asked are people really this surprised that racial slurs are taken more serious than homophobic comments. I didn't see all you guys in an uproar whenever a homophobic comment was made in the past.

No need to bring another controversial issue into this thread. There's already enough flaming and arguing going on. :p

Says you, but it's offensive to some people whether it's directed at them or not. How would you like it if your nationality was used to denote something as something negative. So for instance, instead of calling a game 'gay' because it sucked, and calling it a racial slur instead. And not only that, but having it used regularly by people everywhere.

And BTW, did you read that thread... that wasn't his only hateful post.

I not only read and participated in the thread, but I talked to millennium one on one for quite awhile after. People are to sensitive if they let words hurt them. There are much worse things in the world, why should something someone says bother you so much?

We're not all little angels here. The point isnt about hatefulness. Its about a double standard.

Why do the homophobes get free reign to be bigots while the rest of us closet racists have to keep it all bottled up inside for fear of being banned? (BTW that was sarcasm, just in case your meter isnt working)

So your problem is a double standard. You're unhappy that FelixDeKat wasn't banned? Well then why don't you work towards that then, then at least you'll be on some moral grounds at least.
