What's the "perfect" CoD game?

Kabob

Lifer
So, there's alot of debate about the progression of the CoD games and what's gotten worse vs. what's gotten better. I was wondering, if we were to design our own "perfect" mixture of all the games, what would we include? I know that not everyone likes the same attributes, so we'll try to get as close to a concensus as we can.

Lets stick to CoD only, I know there are other games that have interesting additions we could make, but it was CoD that redefined the genre.

I'll save the post below for the "official" list.

I'll get us started off:

CoD 4
  • Simplicity - There's so much less going on, both in the maps and in the sky.
  • Maps - I think there's little debate about how phenominal most of the maps are.
  • Limited Killstreaks - Places more on an emphasis on the FPS part of the game and less on overpowered killstreak rewards.
  • Weapon Sounds - As the genre went on it seems that the guns started sounding more like pop guns. Look at the M4, the AK-47, and RPD in CoD 4, they're all very "manly."
  • Replinishing ammunition - Any weapon that shoots the same bullets that your gun does give you ammo. Changing that was one of the silliest ideas ever.

Modern Warfare 2
  • Dedicated anti-air weapons - The RPG just didn't cut it for taking out choppers.
  • Plethora of weapon attachments - Speaks for itself.
  • Bling - Makes sense to me!

Black Ops
  • Credit system - Fantastic in theory, poor in execution. They need to make everything more expensive.
  • Unlock anything at any time- The fact that you don't have to wait until lvl 25 to evade UAV's is a great idea.
  • Lack of Stopping Power - They definitely got this right. Stopping Power is so imperitive for most gamers that it sort of ruins the Perk 2 slot.
  • SR-71 - Having a killstreak that penetrates Ghost is a big bonus.
  • Party System - By far the best of the series.
  • Stat Tracking - Tons of good info.

Things to stay away from
  • Commando - This perk nearly ruined MW2 at first.
  • Danger Close - This perk DID ruin MW2 for a while.
  • Scavenger - Annoying in MW2, not as bad in Black Ops, just allow you to get ammo from all similar weapons.
  • Kill ratio in non-TDM/FFA game modes - Daekwan has talked about this alot. Getting rid of the KDR entirely in other game modes will keep people from camping over and over. Focus on win ratio and captures/defends only.

BTW, I'm cross posting this on AVS and will combine ideas.

Even though people like to hate on the Trey Arch games, I really liked the campaign co-op in W@W. None of the other games have had that. I'm a huge fan of co-op, so that would almost always be part of a "perfect" game for me, especially an FPS.

[edit] Reading through your list it seems you're talking about MP only?

unless i'm missing something, how the hell did Danger Close ruin the game?

isn't that the perk that lets you see claymores?

And scavenger? I love scavenger, lol.

Black Ops doesn't have a party system does it? that was in MW2.

No, Danger Close made your explosions alot bigger.

You're thinking of Bomb Squad from CoD 4 and Sitrep in MW2.

TANKS FROM W@W! -- or some form.

I do enjoy vechicals.. maybe some bigger maps so we can use vechicles.

I would love to see separate K/D ratios for deathmatch and objective games. I haven't played BO so I don't know how the stat tracking works, but if there is a "summary" screen somewhere, it should display (by default) your deathmatch K/D and your objective W/L ratios. Overall K/D should be hidden further down.

It's not so much that I'm a stat whore as I realize that other people are. Make DM K/D the stat everyone talks about, not overall.

Other than that, I agree with everything you said. I still think COD4 was the best, but add a few features from the later games and remove stopping power/juggernaut and it would be perfect. Throw in Bling, guided launchers, and the ability to unlock stuff whenever. I liked how grenade launchers were handled in COD4 - you were limited to 2 grenades and it negated your perk 1 (so no grenade launchers + 3x frag). You could get 4 grenades by using Overkill, but that prevents you from selecting Sonic Boom.

Making shotguns a little more effective would be good too. The Terminators in MW2 were crazy pre-nerf, but the SPAS was pretty well balanced. Powerful out to a reasonable range (not limited to point blank), low rate of fire. As primaries in COD4, they were really underpowered.

The thing that really turned me off from the COD series was killstreaks. They're overused and overpowered. I'm glad BO dialed that back a bit, but I still like how COD4 did it. Go inside any building and you're basically invulnerable to them. The one thing I didn't like about COD4's streaks were how the UAVs worked - in a free for all game, they only work during the life that you call them in. Die and they disappear. I like being able to shoot them down and having them stay up regardless of whether you die or not.

pontifex what universe are you on?

Perfect CoD game would likely be the hybrid of MW1, MW2, W@W, and BO. In my perfect world...it would probably be based on MW2 than anything:

1) Large maps from MW1/MW2
2) Party system from BO
3) Removal of most kill streaks (limited to UAV, UAV jammer, predator/valkyrie, gun turret, air strike, helicopter)
4) Similar perk system as MW2 (non-pro and pro perks)
5) Removal of stopping power, otherwise keep most perks the same.
6) Shotguns remain secondary choices
7) Removal of last stand

I'll probably think of more later...

Agreed with everything above. My additions:

Make the RCXD a 5 kill streak.

I think the weapons sounds need to be completely revamped from the ground up. Check out MGS4's weapon sound effects and compare them to COD, it's almost pathetic.

Get rid of last stand. It's just annoying and makes no sense.

Put all the maps from every COD in the game, with the exception of: Hanoi, Wasteland, and Bloc

COD 4 had the best SP campaign hands down. I've played almost every COD and COD4 was the most intense/epic/movie-like story. I really felt like I was in a movie while playing.

As for MP, CoD4 was good and COD MW2 brought about a lot of much needed improvements. The ammo replenishing change I think was actually good. Don't forget one of the BEST/BIGGEST changes from COD4 -> COD MW2 was the host migration function.

I like the sounds from COD MW and MW2 more than Black Ops/WaW.

I would say the Black Ops improvements to scavenger fixed any problems with it. Namely, not being able to resupply equipment (claymores)

a "perfect" CoD game, more than anything, would have infinity wards people work on the engine and map design, with treyarchs people working on the balancing, updating and community involvement.

As far as the single player goes, i think that the IW games were ahead...until MW2. That was a cluster-eff of a campaign, and black ops was pretty awesome.

It would have both zombies and spec ops. Even better would be a campaign co-op as well.

They would release maps more quickly and at less money (i.e. instead of 4 for 15 after 4 months, release 1 new map every month for 3 bucks)

just my 2 cents. for what its worth i played the single player games, but only started the multiplayer stuff in mw2. I think black ops is way more balanced, but much worse level design.

The combat record stuff is awesome too.

I agree, but I think that going back to the CoD 4 formula of "if it shoots the same ammo, you can resupply from it" method worked the best. So I can't get ammo for my M4 with a red dot because this guy's M4 has a suppressor on it...seriously?

Yeah, Treyarch does a better job of keeping things running, but overall design they don't hold a candle.

In a perfecter world it'd be a combined effort between IW and Bungie, but that's too much to ask for 😀

well, my experience with CoD is PC only so maybe it's different on consoles.

Yeah I definitely agree with this. Guns should be damn loud. Hell, make them unrealistically loud like in a Hollywood blockbuster - since that's what CoD games are anyway, action movies in video game form. And give them a lot more bass instead of the little treble "pop pop" sounds they currently have.

I still maintain that CoD 4's weapon sounds were, as a whole, fantastic. Blown out of the water by BC2's, in sheer depth though.

MW2 minus the nuke, OMA, Danger Close + Some of the new stuff that BLOPS brought..such as the credit system, wager matches, zombie, and stats galore... minus the horribly broken party system.

On MW2 Danger close + scavenger or one man army using the tube or rpg is ridiculous. It gets overused in nearly every game mode. I like hardcore mode for a little slower paced more tactics based match. Even there you have guys just spamming 40mm and RPG's and racking up kills.
