What's the penalty if caught flashing high-beams to warn about a speed trap?

I realize this is going to vary by location, but in general is it even illegal? I like to do it as a courtesy, but I'm always worried about missing seeing a cop in the oncoming traffic.

That's like tipping a criminal off to avoid the police? Yes if caught someone should get a citation for it.

I do it all the time. Good luck to the cop that tries to give me a ticket for doing so. I won't sign the ticket. He will have to arrest me and with an arrest comes a lot of paperwork. Most cops would be too lazy to take you in on something so stupid.

In Wisconsin its over $500 fine. My buddy got a warning for doing it. He unknowningly flashed another cop.

Don't think there can be a penalty for that. I mean you can just say you were adjusting your lights or something. They have no way of proving intent.

Those are not even comparable and you don't deserve a citation for flashing you headlights. Someone is only speeding if a cop SEES them, yet a cop doesn't have to see someone stealing to arrest him. If you tip people off to slow down are you not achieving the same goal as the cops? Remember, cops say they give tickets to slow people down for their own and everyone elses safety so you are merely helping them with their job then.

You know I'm really glad I don't drive.

Why don't you ask an officer and get their input on this?

Why? I don't care that much about the issue. I only tip people off to speed traps during the daytime when I can see who I am warning. It is not like a cop is going to see me. If one did and tried to cite me they would have to arrest me as I WOULD NOT sign the ticket.

That is totally different and not comparable.

A criminal already commited a crime, hence the word "criminal".

People driving on the other side of the road have been convicted of no crimes.

Alerting other (innocent) people of an officer's presence is not a crime.

This is not criminal behavior. I've spent many thousands of hours evaluating vehicular speeds, accidents, etc. and speed is rarely the cause. Inattention, roadway geometrics, as well as substance abuse may be factors.
Speed traps are a revenue issue, not a safety issue.
My sincere thanks to the other posters for warning other drivers, I also do the same. I originally learned to do this in eastern Canada. I don't know where others learned the signals. Sometimes, I believe the warning isn't understood.
Where did the other courteous drivers learn this technique?

Speeding is a crime. If you get caught you pay for it. :) It's funny how people will do things to circument getting caught whether it's painting their plates to avoid cameras at intersections, radar detectors, cb radios, etc.

We know who all the speeders are in this thread! :D

Brilliant idea on the lawyer thing, didn't even think of it. I get free legal counsel from my job.

I'm just worried about it being some obstruction of justice charge.

In Ohio it wasn't a big deal because the police have to use full light bars, but here in Kentucky there are all sorts of undercover cops all over. Just the other day I saw a flat blue Dodge Stratus with big blacked out wheels and real dark tint. Only way to know it's a cop is the spotlight. The Cameros used down here don't even have the spotlight from what I remember.

I'm sorry I have to say this, but from this comment, I can only reach one conclusion: you are a tool.

No, just a female. Remember that their logic works completely different from that of a man.

I'm concerned as to what your knowledge is of transportation engineering and standards. That's where I've worked. I believe you used the word "criminal." Is a jaywalker a "criminal," who needs to be ostracized by society?

1. Speeding is not a crime. It's a traffic violation.

2. You're not guilty of any crime until you're convicted in a court of law.

You cannot apply the logic that someone is already guilty before they've been tried in court.

Everyone who drives, licensed or not, is a speeder at some point in time, whether by accident or on purpose. And yes, I warn people for about 1/2 mile when I pass a squatter.

My wife was friends with a lady who was once pulled over for flashing her lights and warning oncoming cars. She flashed her lights at an unmarked cruiser, and when the officer pulled her over and asked her why she was flashing her lights, she just simply replied, "Just the rules of the road, that's all." Basically, he had nothing on her, and had to let her go.

The citation verbiage I've read says it charges the offender with a crime.

I searched a bit and found a discussion here.

Notice that some of the participants are law enforcement officers. Interesting stuff. :)

What does that have to do with this topic?

That requires them to have some.

thawolfman that'd be cool. I was thoroughly saved once by a guy flashing his lights at me (cop around a blind corner) so I'd like to do it back if it isn't too much of a legal risk.
