I suppose I could rebuild an old rig using those old parts. It's just the incompatibility with modern browsers that's the main issue. A low powered machine should at least be able to cruze the internet and check your email. I only have one socket A mobo left. It's just there in case I want to someday put the old chips to use.

Of all the boxes in current use, my oldest is my newest build. I repurposed my i7 920, Asus P6T Deluxe v2, 6gb of Super Talent ram, Seasonic 850W Silver, added an MSI GTX 950 Gaming 2G (silent w/built in HEVC decoder and HDMI 2.0 support), Thermalright AXP-200R cpu cooler, a SATA III (6Gbps) controller card, a Samsung 850 128GB SSD, a USB 3.0 PCI-E card and stuffed it all in a Lian Li full ATX HTPC case. I added a FliRC USB dongle and control it with my smartphone via Wi-Fi using the Yatse app. Boots straight into Kodi. Sweet!

My 2550K rig is probably oldest right now, but I have consecutively used Athlon XP 2500 rig since 2004 until I sold it in 2012.

My computer and my wife's computer were, until recently, 2010 vintage. My computer got an upgrade in August but her computer, which has been the HTPC for 3 years, is still going. It's a Phenom II X2, MSI 760 motherboard, 5770 video card. The PSU is even older, though. It's a quality unit from Enermax, I believe, that's from 2006 or so.

The PSU is even older, though. It's a quality unit from Enermax, I believe, that's from 2006 or so.

I would replace that, pronto. 10 years is really a limit for PSU, I think. 5 years for most, to be truthful.

I have a friend that I hooked up with an Enhance 500W 80Plus PSU with Japanese caps (from an old Hot Deal here at geeks.com), probably 5-6 years ago.

I mentioned to him a few months back that he should replace his PSU, because that one might not last much beyond 5 years. Well, he listened to me, and bought a backup PSU, a $16 AR Corsair 430CX.

Anyways, a week or two ago, we were on Skype, and he disconnected. He gets back to me an hour later, and shows me the older PSU, dangling from wires. Apparently, it decided to give up the Magic Smoke, just like that.

He's running an AMD 4-core APU, stock speeds, 4 RAM sticks, a few HDDs and an SSD. Nothing major, and no dGPU. Probably 100-150W TOPS. Idle is probably below 100W.

Still, even with that low a load, it finally just "went". He was handy enough to be able to swap in the new PSU, and get up and running.

Given that anecdote, I would REALLY think about replacing that PSU. No matter how well it "appears" to be working.

I'm reusing an older rig for my MAME arcade cabinet. Though it's not that old, has a core i7 ivybridge which should be amazing for emulation since they rely so heavily on cpu's. Just need to get a marquee, bezel.etc made for it.

Oldest in everyday use is my desktop rig in sig... 2500K and Giga Z68, which I built primarily with Black Friday parts from 2011... including the $150 2500K from MicroCenter! I've continued to upgrade it... I think the only original parts left are the CPU/mobo and maybe the CD drive.

I have an older Dell lappy with a 2-core AMD chip I've upgraded with a better CPU, more RAM, and my old OCZ 64GB SSD; I'm using it to learn Linux.

I've still got a Phenom X4 9750 running in an MSI 785G board with 2x2GB of DDR2 800MT/s and a Radeon HD 4670. The system is plenty quick with a 240GiB OCZ Arc 100 and Windows 10. This system is used everyday by a family member of mine with no complaints.

lol. Running an Athlon II X4 640 on an MSI 785G (-E53), still on XP. Considering Windows 10 though, because some of my software won't run on XP.

My old gaming computer, circa 2002~
AMD Duron 1100 "Morgan" (Formerly an Athlon XP 2200+, but I sold that for money years ago an put this older processor in it)
Abit NF7-S
1gb Kingston DDR 400
PNY GeForce 4 TI4200 64mb (had a 9800 pro in it, but I sold that with the XP 2200+ to build my e6750 machine in 2007)
60gb OCZ SSD
500gb Hitachi HDD
Thermaltake Xaser II 5000
Antec 550w PSU

I was running this up until 2006/7 full time an then I build an e6750 machine on an IP35-E. As long as you aren't streaming it's fine for web browsing with Opera or Firefox. I primarily use it for old games like Doom, Quake & HL1.

My backup PC circa 2008 went to my grandparents an they use it every day.
Intel Q9550 stock (originally an E4300)
ASUS P5Q-SE (the Abit AB9 died)
4gb Crucial DDR2
BFG GTS-250
500gb Hitachi HDD
Chieftec Dragon
Antec 620W PSU
