Frankly, you are correct.

Soccer is for poor people
Thank you.

Nobody actually enjoys watching soccer, its simply the cheapest option. All you need for soccer is a ball, for football you need tons of equipment and only America can afford this. As soon as other countries raise their GDP to be comparable to ours, they abandon soccer. Look at how the NFL sold out in England for the last few years. Nobody would ever go to a soccer game in America because we have better options like baseball and football. People in other countries don't they have to settle on soccer because of poverty but yearn for exciting sports like basketball which is slightly more expensive.

Because you know its true. Saying soccer is the most watched sport because of world cup is like saying sprinting is the most watched sport because of the olympics. On an annual basis, the NFL is the most watched sport in the world. It only ceases to be that once every four years, when a huge mass of third world countries watch soccer world cup because they can afford soccer and because they can't compete with us in real football.

I'm sorry, but this is pretty much common knowledge, ask any guy in any sports bar in America and he will tell you the same.

No you're wrong. Soccer is THE MOST WATCHED year round. Every year. Every 4th year, it DEMOLISHES everything else in it's path.

You're ignoring every single fact and figure that everyone has thrown at you in this thread. You claim you made the thread "to get some data but can't find anything definitive" yet when given the data you ignore it and still think the NFL is the top dog.

Your thread sucks. Your argument sucks. Your theory sucks.

Trolling confirmed. Don't feed the troll. If he seriously believes what he says, he REALLY needs to get out of the US and travel a little.

And please go to any English pub in poor old Britain and tell everyone why their poor selves are wrong and why you are right so that they can beat some sense into you.

Mr. Troll, sir.

England? Italy? Spain? France? Germany? Netherlands?

Ya those poor-ass countries.

Soccer is the most popularly PLAYED sport due to its cheap entry level and universal appeal. There's no arguing that. And in turn it has gain unprecedented world-wide cult follows because more people play it more than any other sport. That I will agree with.

This however was not what you asked. Is not what the poll is asking and is not what the thread was about.

You are "new" to these forums, but I highly doubt by your attitude and your vigor that you are actually a NEW poster.

He is completely wrong about football being more popular, soccer is the most popular by far. But he is right on poor countries and it being most popular there.

The most densely populated countries will always be poor though, or at least the vast majority of their population will be low income households.

Just look at the countries where soccer is most popular, Argentina, and Brazil are two of the top with Brazil being number 1 in terms of population ratio per. And then look at where its most popular in Brazil, the slums of Rio and Sao Paulo. People don't know in the US because they've never been there, but Sao Paulo Brazil is, by far, the poorest, dirtiest city I've ever been to. And one thing I remember most after the poverty and sadness, and the beautiful women on the beach, was all the kids playing soccer in those dirty ass streets.

Have you ever been to Spain or Portugal or France? The number of poor low income people is crazy, the number of downright "slums" and poor areas is astounding. Its different then the US because of the number of social programs they have there versus the US. The US may have more homeless people, but the European countries have many many more poor areas where people are practically homeless and live in shanty towns.

I've been to France. I didn't mention Portugal.

As for the US poor living in shanty towns, we call that West Virgina.

You can not trivialize why a sport is/isn't popular to it coming down to costs. Especially when there are plenty of 1st world countries where soccer is the king of sports (like all of Europe) that contradicts your theory. The NFL has been trying to bust into Europe for what a decade now? Hasn't taken root at all.

France, Portugal, Spain, Italy. They're all very similar. Tons of very very poor people in lots of very poor areas. A lot more then you see in the US.

Go to a major city in the US, lets say Chicago and they are on the streets begging. You see homeless people, yes but you don't actually see most of them. They are mostly hidden. In Paris there are 100's even thousands of kids stealing from you because thats how they make money for their family. Go to the outer parts of Paris and the shanty towns are enormous. They ride the public transportation into town and thats how they make money.

I've been all through Europe and its crazy, I've also seen a very eye opening documentaries on the crazy amount of low income crime in Europe, all over Europe. The stories about the so called "gypsies" from Romania and abroad are pretty crazy too.

Europe has several very, very poor countries. So whatever. And even the so called rich countries you are going to bring up have a much higher low income population then the US or Canada. The richest countries in Europe, such as Sweeden just to name one - couldn't care less about soccer. Hockey is king there because of the weather, obviously.

Thanks so very much for the social economic lessons of Europe. Now can you explain how this pertains to the thread and the question in the poll/OP at all?

It only pertains to the arguments in this thread.

Soccer is the most popular sport in the world. By far.

Soccer is also, in very large part, for poor people. I don't care if you agree or not, but its true. Most of the world is poor, and thats just the way it is.

Poor isn't such a bad thing any way, its just life. The happiest people I know or have ever known were all of pretty limited means. Sometimes I envy people in the rest of the world. In the US we care too much about money, and the culture is a visage of that attitude. Soccer cannot make money. They don't even have commercials until halftime, why would the US want such a sport to be popular?

Not to mention that soccer is boring because scoring is rare. Higher scoring sports offer more excitement and therefore are more popular. That's the biggest reason soccer isn't popular in the first world.
