Not to mention that soccer is boring because scoring is rare. Higher scoring sports offer more excitement and therefore are more popular. That's the biggest reason soccer isn't popular in the first world.

by that argument, basketball should be more popular than football even in the US. and baseball shouldn't even be more than an afterthought.

and i dont know why you see europe as not being in the first world. in your educated opinion, is the US the only first world country in the entire world? WTF?

you're probably right about your bar room example. only drunks will make these kind of stupid arguments.

Care to elaborate or are you just being a douche bag as usual

Your post is so ignorant that I don't know where to start. You obviously know nothing about the entrenched poverty in the United States.

Edit -- to further show AMDZen's ignorance:
United states
Population below poverty line:12% (2004 est.)

France
Population below poverty line: 6.2% (2004)

It only pertains to the arguments in this thread.

Soccer is the most popular sport in the world. By far.

Soccer is also, in very large part, for poor people. I don't care if you agree or not, but its true. Most of the world is poor, and thats just the way it is.

Poor isn't such a bad thing any way, its just life. The happiest people I know or have ever known were all of pretty limited means. Sometimes I envy people in the rest of the world. In the US we care too much about money, and the culture is a visage of that attitude. Soccer cannot make money. They don't even have commercials until halftime, why would the US want such a sport to be popular?

/agreed. Although I don't envy people in other parts of the world because we have football, baseball, and hockey. I feel sorry for them.

You soccer freaks are such a touchy bunch, constantly having to defend your boring, non-athletic sport by claiming its "the most popular sport in the world" when we all know that its like saying eating mcdonalds or drinking water is more popular than eating prime rib or beer. Just because soccer is cheaper and there is more of it doesn't mean its the biggest most watched most cared about spectator sport. I still haven't seen any evidence other than the world cup.

Finally a post from a rational man. Anybody who is given a choice between soccer, football, baseball and hockey will pick soccer last.

With that stupid, insane and ignorant post. I'm done with this thread.
For what it's worth. I don't follow soccer. I'll watch the world cup of course, but in general it's not my cup of tea.

Oh and non-athletic? are you fucking nuts? (rhetorical. We know that answer)

Welcome to ATOT. I really look forward to more great posts from you in the future.

I was in Spain in 2008 when they won the EuroCup and the entire country was off the hook partying that night it seemed. Half the people who watch the Super Bowl probably just watch for the commercials.

Yes, I know...I'm just feeding the troll.
