I was watching the Suicide Tourist on Frontline and they used an overdose of a Barbiturate. He just drifted off to sleep no pain nothing.

Whoa. I've seen every episode of M*A*S*H several times and I love that show... but I had no idea the theme song had lyrics!

OP: I'd vote for shotgun blast to the face.

Pretty cool movie goes with those lyrics too. I feel really old now :(

Anecdotal evidence seems to say that the eyes might still "see" for up to 10 seconds after decapitation. Not the "for a while" that he indicated.. but still creepy.

10 seconds is quite a long time, with your head not being part of your body.

who was that worthless idiot on here that OD'd and somehow managed to not die....seems like whatever it was he took could do the trick pretty painlessly..

That's a trick question since there's no specific answer for most painless since there are many ways to die painlessly. There's no such thing as dying less than painlessly.

Other than dying of old age that is.

I wrote this in another thread:

IMHO, the guillotine is the quickest, surest, most preferable way to carry out an execution. Until the blade hits your neck, there is no pain, not from the needle, noose, uncomfortable chair and its strapping,....death comes as sudden as one can imagine. What is the reason governments around the world stop using it? the messy clean up afterwards? I can't imagine the executed would give a rat's ass about that problems.

Have someone choke you out and keep going with it. Takes 6 seconds to lose consciousness from blood cut off to head and doesn't hurt.

Large caliber bullet to the head. Painless for you, although messy for the poor guy who has to clean it up.

CO is not carbon dioxide. Close, but still fail.

Do you feel better now?

I thought the wiki link was interesting and relevant since we're discussing gas poisoning. I didn't think it was necessary to point out I know the difference.

There are many many cases where the guillotine wasn't sharp/strong enough and leave a blunt trauma on your neck and they have prop the thing again while you writhe in pain with your neck cut only half way.

Zanejohnson. He chewed a Fentanyl patch, IIRC. It sounds like it would have taken awhile to die from that, but from what he said it seemed pretty painless.

Seeing as how Fentanyl is one of the most powerful painkillers available I would imagine that ODing on it would be fairly painless.

Yeah, but you run the risk of not taking enough and suffering permanent damage.

Massive morphine overdose or sleeping in a running car inside a sealed garage.

Sleeping pills can be pretty painful and the amount of pain could keep you awake as you die. I forgot where I read that response, but it was from some nurse that was explaining one of the patients dying slow and painfully, and only thing they could do was to try and ease the pain because it was too late.

That could been Tylenol overdose which is horribly painful.

Oh and the theme from MASH was taken from a scene in the movie MASH where one of the characters had a sending off party before trying to off himself.

Tylenol OD causes liver failure, which is a very very bad way to go.

Yes while you are staring at your body... May or may not hurt but you are fully aware for quite a while after it happens.

most cases of semi-consciousness post-beheading are circumstancial, and it has never been officially documented.

I think there is only one case, where a physician in France jotted down some notes that the eyes of the condemned widened, with the mouth, for about 2 seconds after the beheading. That's pretty much all of the research on this topic.

On top of that, there is essentially no way to determine whether or not the individual was actually aware of what was going on, and for how long. It's difficult to ask a recently lopped-off head "Say, what's it like without a body?" Could simply be endorphin rush to the dome causing physiological changes.
