These days it's not always about buying things you can't afford. A CC gives rewards, allows for convenience and is the best way to buy things online.
It's also not as dangerous as carrying $500 around on you for emergencies.
It also protects you if you are robbed... you simply call your credit card company and cancel the card and let them know it was stolen and you're not responsible for any charges made. If you have cash stolen from you... you're SOL.
*EDIT* A debit card may do the exact same thing... but hey, it's all about responsibility... if you can't control yourself with a credit card you shouldn't have one. They do come in handy sometimes if you're caught between a rock and a hard place. Especially when companies practically beg to give you a card with 0% APR.
