What's the deal with white/Caucasian people putting their elderly in a nursing home?

Maybe it's because I'm Asian but we never put our Lolo or Lola's in a nursing home. We believe in family and always take care of them first, no matter what. I guess I don't understand the culture of the put in a nursing home and forget it type mentality. Is one's life really too busy to take care of the person that once took care of you?

I think that in the U.S., there are way too many people who simply cannot afford for one or more members of the family to stay home and take care of our elderly. It sucks but, that's often the sad truth of it.

I don't have this problem, but I'm certain that I could not care for my grandparents if they could not longer care for themselves. I'm out of the house a full 12 hours every day, and there is no one who could watch them while I was gone. It would practically be like living alone for them anyway.

I'll bet that asian families usually have able bodies of some sort (stay at home mom, cousin, sister, etc.) at the house at all times, which makes caring for the elderly more practical.

FWIW If I had a full family with someone at the house all the time I would never consider a nursing home for my elder immediate relatives though.

It has nothing to do with race and everything to do with cost.

Maybe you shouldn't judge others? Worry about yourself.

They care, just care less. Otherwise why else would they put their parents in a nursing home?

Bullshit. Judge others like most people here on ATOT? For example the black comments?

Just an FYI, Asians would rather adjust their work schedules or get a new job so their mothers or fathers or whomever were taken care of all the time.

FWIW, a nursing home does provide a community of peers and caregivers that many households with two working spouses can't provide. Plus many of us are raised to be independent and don't want to be a burden on others.

In b4 lock.
Also, if I had the money to do full time in home hospice I would prefer that instead of an old folks home.

I'm not sure "cost" is the best argument. A nursing home can run $5,000 to $10,000 a month.

Which is paid by the person in the facility until their finances are depleted to the point that the government steps in. It's called "spending down" and yes it sucks that your parents could work their entire lives and have to do a reverse mortgage just in order to pay the bills until they're poor enough.

What part of not being able to afford having one or more family members stay home to care for our elderly, did you not understand? Most Americans do not have the resources to allow one or more wage earners to stay home let alone pay for health care.

Yet the evil British nationalized health service makes house calls for elderly patients so the patients can continue to live at home.

Eh, it's ok as long as you're up front with it. I mean, if you don't want to be in a nursing home then you should plan your retirement better so that you can hire a live-in servant. I already told my mother that I will be putting her in a home. Since she knows this now, she can better prepare for the eventuality herself.

The point of the whole health care crisis is that, short of being independently wealthy, NO ONE can afford long term health care.

Bingo I think you nailed it. Brown + Asian families are extremely reliant on each other and not independent as in North America so the grandparents are far more likely to end up with the family than in a nursing home or even alone.

There are plenty of work opportunities for the elderly. If she wants treatment commensurate to her expectations she can easily find work in the housekeeping or food services industry. Besides, when we sell her house and car that should be good for a couple of years worth of nursing home care. Plus we can always put her in a cheaper home if we need to. It'll depend on how her portfolio falls out.

Asian culture = Parents have kids so that kids can make money for family and take care of parents.

American culture = Parents have kids so that kids that drain the parents of all money, go to College, and still be supported by the parents at the age of 30 when the kids have their own kids.

Because Asians have a repressive guilt-tripping type of culture where not doing everything for their grandparents would be dishonorable, and because blacks don't live long enough to need a nursing home.

We put them nursing homes because we are going green and the cardboard boxes that they used to use to live in kill too many trees to make.
