Some people will never understand why Led Zeppelin was great for the same reason they can't understand why such a "sloppy guitarist" as Hendrix is considered among the best in history. For the same reason they cannot grasp the greatness and relevance of Elvis Presley or The Beatles. For the same reason they cannot understand why Mozart was revolutionary.

Not only do they lack taste, but they lack the ability to put things into historical context.

One can only hope that they grow up, and their musical taste and grasp of historical relevance widens.

The combination of JPJ's classically trained talent, Jimmy Page's virtuousity (he was like a magician with his guitar), Bonham's tightly controlled creative mania on the drums, and Plant's ability to make passionate love with his voice was unprecedented.

That's why, when Bonzo died, it was the end. That perfect chemistry couldn't be recreated.

People who know music (as in, have been trained musically) generally agree that Led Zeppelin was a band beyond compare.

Led Zepplin took the legacy of great Rock Bands like Cream and Hendrix and turned it up a couple of notches without of the technology that Bands have at their disposal today

It's funny. Almost all the bands you listed ( Primus, Radiohead, Metallica) cite Led Zepplin as a musical influence. Musicians are clever like that, they know good music when they hear it. Led Zepplin is certainly great music.

The Les Claypool story (Les being the main force behind Primus, of course) begins on September 29, 1963, when he was born in Richmond, CA. As a teenager, Claypool met fellow student Kirk Hammett (yes, the Kirk Hammett of Metallica fame), who turned him onto such rock acts as Jimi Hendrix, Cream, and Led Zeppelin.

Linky

So that indicates that Primus and Metallica both owe a debt to Led Zepplin. I could spend some more time looking for Radiohead's influences, but Im too lazy, and I'm sure you would find they cite Zepplin as an influence too.

what do you consider musically trained? i took piano lessons for years, played trombone for a number of years after that, and play guitar now. i consider myself musically diverse, enjoying everything from classical to jazz to country to rock to metal to rap. its that whole "band beyond compare" thing that just doesn't click. maybe i missed something - what are some examples of songs that just blow you away - killer riffs, tight drums, tight sound all around

lol wheres rolling stones "most overrated band evar" award?

How can they be over rated if they have the most top 100 albums of all time?
They beat out the Beatles and the Stones.

Edmicman,

Go grab a copy of "Bring it on Home". Wait for it to kick in.
That's tight drums, a killer riff.... that's the total package right there.

It's not that they were necessarily excellent musicians. Jimmy Page wasn't very good with his technique, but he was VERY innovative with his music. He's got mistakes on a lot of their recordings. On the other hand, John Bonham was an incredible drummer. They just some how seemed to click into place together. If you listen to the BBC sessions or any live recording, you can see this come together. They were just a great band TOGETHER. They're not much without each other. Which is probably why they broke up shortly after Bonham's death.

Thank you, Pulse8. That's precisely it. It was the combination of the four musicians, which I stated in my first sentence, that made them uncomparable. Oh, and you can be trained musically and not be musical, just like you can be musical and not trained formally... I'll give you that. :D

*steps up to the mic*

And the award for most overrated band in the world goes to...

The Rolling Stones

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Happy now? and for all you people who say, "Well without Zeppelin there wouldn't be any *blah*" Guess what? You've just discovered the amazing principle of musical progression! It happens, get over yourselves. The only reason a lot of newer bands aren't as popular as Zeppelin or Pink Floyd is because they haven't had 20 years to sit around and collect dust yet. You don't get "new" music? fine. You don't have to. Others don't get "old" music? great. They don't have to either. Listen to what you like, sit down and quitcherbitchin.

The Rolling Stones took Soul Music and incorporated into Rock n Roll like no other band before it's time. They too were innovators and are far from being the most over rated band of all time.

Zeppelin is one of the most innovative and influential bands of all time. It's funny you mention Primus. This is a lyric from their song "Year of the Parrot":
"take a Zeppelin riff / and you alter it a bit / you make lots of money / it's called plagiarism."
So Primus recognizes that many bands today are not only heavily influenced by Zep, they often steal from them.

Zep has way too many great songs to count. Definitely in my top 5 bands of all time.

Even in their time, Zeppelin and Pink Floyd's greatness was recognized. You'll find few bands today that have the cult following those artists had, even in their day.

And to call the Rolling Stones "overrated" only exemplifies my earlier post.

Led Zepplin Started out as a Hard Rock Blues Band somewhat like the earlier Hard Rock Bands like Cream and eventually came up with their own style that was emulated by bands of that era.

Neither the Stones or LedZep are overrated IMHO. Show me any band nowadays that puts out so much great music. The Red Hots ? STP ? they don't come close to these guys, but its a generational thing maybe. I sometimes play Physical Graffitti over and over at my job, and never get tired of it.

Yep, that's another thing. In our recent era of one/two hit wonders, these bands put out 10s of records of great music. Not on;ly that, but you could count on most, if not all the songs on an album to be worth listening to.

I don't even think you had to be there. I got into Zeppelin in the late 80's when I was 12 or 13. Before, I could never imagine listening to something more than 2 years old. 15 years later they're still my favorite.

If bands today were able to make albums like that the Record Industry wouldn't be hurting like they are.

Yeah but why is there no more good music ? Is it because everything under the sun has been done or there is a lack of creativity w/these young punks ?

Why don't you ask Billy Corgan, Les Claypool, Thom Yorke, or any of those morons in Metallica?
