whats the deal with funeral processions?

when they have a train of cars...the one i saw today, all of them went thru a red light while honking. Can they do that? do they have the right of way in that case?

Yeah, they have to have police escorts ahead of them to block intersections so they can all stay in one line and not get broken up into multiple groups by lights.

plus, they do that so any out of town guests do not get lost by having the procession broken up.
They do have the right of way.

Depends on the state I guess - never heard about any rules or saw any questions about it on the texas written test.

In some states, yes they are allowed to run a red light if the first car in the procession made it through the light.

Yeah, funeral processions are more common in some states than others.

The last one I was in, the driver ahead of me was lagging waaaay behind the car in front as we went through an intersection on a red light. He got hit by cross traffic.

We drive with our lights on and teeny tiny little flags on our roof, but the honking sounds like a good idea also.

No police escort required here.

How do you lag behind in a funeral procession, they drive ~30 mph! 😛

Even if it isn't the law, I would still yield simply out of respect to the family and friends.

These days it's like that's too much to ask.

An overwhelming majority of people would rather be drawn and quartered than wait for a funeral procession. It saddens me sometimes.

Also, I took the MD driver's test and definitely didn't have any mention of funeral processions having the right of way.

Seems like doing that without a police escort would be dangerous.

Last month I was in two of them, and neither had an escort (both were some far drives too). March was not a good month for me.
