Throw a little moisture on the expressways here in Chicago and your commute time increases from x2-x5.

The roads are great when there is nobody on them.;)

I vote Chicago because:

a) The highway infrastructure is in place but the routes aren't very good for the population distribution.
c) The drivers are impatient and the highways and roads during rush hour (actually + & - a couple hours of rush hour too) are overloaded.
d) Too many people commute into and out of the city for jobs.
e) The public transportation is in place but poorly routed for long distances.
f) The public transportation in good routes (ie in the city to downtown) is aging and not as well funded as it should be.

The only way I'd move "home" to Chicago is if I lived on the north side (where I grew up) and commuted on the El to downtown or if I lived in the burbs and commuted to a job close to home. I really hate driving in Chicago. The only other consideration would be to get into the work at 5am and leave at 2pm or 7pm (8pm on Fridays).

Where the 101 and 405 meet is pretty much a hellhole. It's such a given that there will be traffic there every single day no one bothers to even report it. I went there at 9am on a saturday morning and it was a parking lot (and it wasn't because of an accident).

I live right next to the 710 where it begins in Long Beach. There are so many trucks on that freeway it's crazy. The freeway is totally torn up from the weight of all the trucks too.

There are also so many other points of congetion, 91east in the afternoon, the aptly named "Orange Crush", the east L.A. Interchange (5/110/10/101 freeway meet in one spot), and of course everyone's favorite the 405.

Although I must say, the 10 lane wide (not counting carpool lane) 5 freeway south of the 91 is a dream. It opens up so wide from 6 lanes and never has traffic, to bad its such a huge behemoth scarring OC right down the middle.

Having travelled to most of the major cities in the country, and spent a substantial amount of time in each, I would vote LA as the worst...I would also put Denver in the top 10 worst of the earlier posted list due to a project notoriously known as T-Rex, which is adding lanes to every major interstate in Colorado, and installing a trolley system known as the light rail. They have run entire interstates of traffic using only one side of a bridge, closed interstates all together. I would also move NY/NJ higher in the list, and bump Miami for Chicago...contruction and increased population have definitely changed the traffic patterns since 2002.

someone should change the topic to say US city because thats all people seem to know about.

Anyway, bombay traffic is pretty bad and to combat that there are massive flyovers being bulit like everywhere.
