I say DC and LA tie for #1 all around (as far as large traffic areas in every direction)

#2 would be a tie between boston and chicago. There is still horrible congestion but at least it's not overwhelmingly in EVERY direction possible for dozens and dozens of miles.

My biggest problem with DC is that there is litterally one road leading away from it in all 4 directions...that's it. there's really no option to get anywhere at rush hour since every direction is a dead stop.

This guy knows what he is talking about. Thankfully, I no longer drive to work. GO GO METRO SYSTEM!

hehe... this is why i live close to my work so the drive isn't that bad... too bad alexandria apartments suck... for what i pay for in rent... i could be paying a morgage for a 400K house in ohio.

it only sucks if i need to go out to vienna or tysons or go to bmore.

I rent in Alexandria too, and yeah it's too damn expensive here. I used to work in Chantilly, the morning commute wasn't bad at all but being on 66 or 495 around rush hour was pure hell.

I've been to LA a few times, it's pretty bad. Locally, there is an intersection close to where I live which is near a high school and an entrance to the interstate...this place is deadly around 7:30-8:00AM.

The worst I've ever driven in is Dallas-Ft Worth area. Their loop is not well designed at all. Chicago is a dream compared to Dallas. I've never driven in LA or Washington DC, though.

worst can be defined a few ways..

most cars, most sitting in one place - LA, hands down

Traffic the furthest out from the city? Chicago.

Atlanta is actually much better than it was before the Olympics.

Boston, however, wins the prize for the worst layout of streets and traffic you could possibly imagine. There are entrance ramps that go throught the back of parking lots...there is one intersection that has 3 or 4 streets at it with no lights or stop signs...it's just a mess!

I'm going to agree with Atlanta. I've never been to Boston but I've been told it's horrendous.

Atlanta, we also have the worst drivers. 6-7 lanes wide and bumper to bumper traffic (I-85).

i second this ... atleast i go against traffic on my way to/from work.

but now that it gets dark at 5 and i leave at 5:30 i have to take backroads, cause for some reason, people drive like they are blind when its dark out, and 495 is fvcking horrible now a days at night time in rush hour.

A lot changes in 3 years. Actually, its closer to five years because its the end of 2005. And also because the data for that study was collected in 2001 and 2002.

Denver is on that list now, but I'm trying to find a newer study
