What's the best way to make popcorn?

I have bought microwave popcorn for years and I like the convenience and no need to cleanup. Lately I've become bored with it and have started popping it on the stove.

I use a deep no-stick skillet with a clear lid. I use canola oil and organic bulk bin popcorn. I let the oil get really hot then pour in the kernels and they all pop really fast. I then throw it all into a paper sack then heat butter in the same pan then pour that with some sea salt into the bag. I shake it up and then serve it in a bowl.

The taste is so much better than microwave. The down side is you have the cleanup the skillet.

I have had friends tell me air poppers are the best but I don't feel like buying another kitchen gadget.

What you are doing is the best. The air popper just doesn't taste as good. We do it both ways as well.

Yup. In a hot pot or pan with oil is best. I put three kernels in at first and when they pop I know the oil is hot enough and add the rest of the kernels.

Microwavers and air poppers should be brutally beaten.

I like air popped stuff done up with lots of melted butter. Skillets are good for it too though.

Stove popping is the best. So freaking delicious!

My friend has a paper bag, microwave technique that works pretty well, but I still prefer the stovetop method.

I used to do things your way. The hot air popcorn popper is awesome though. I thoroughly enjoy it and there is absolutely no clean up. i have a small butter melting pot. Like 2-3" in diameter. The popcorn pops directly into a round bowl, I then add the butter and salt and the shape of the bowl allows me to toss it around for mixing.

Better yet, if hte butter is melted prior to popping, I rotate the bowl that is collecting the popcorn and add butter as it pops as to allow for even spreading.

I worked in a theater when I was sixteen and we used a coconut oil mixture that included butterfat and some other fattening ingredients. The popcorn was greasy but melted in your mouth. The FDA later banned some of the stuff, I think. My boss told me that the popcorn profits paid for all of our measly paychecks.

Whirly pop with Corn oil. Add salt.

A small bag of sour patch kids to go with it sometimes. Amazing complimentary foods.

I use a Whirley Pop but any stove top method will do. The key to great popcorn is coconut oil. Nothing beats it. I like this stuff http://www.popcornpopper.com/rethpopooil.html but you can get any plain coconut oil.

I popped some popcorn with coconut oil a few times, and I didn't notice much of a difference in taste compared to canola or peanut oil. Not only that, coconut oil has more saturated fat than I care for (yea I know, it's not that much oil, but still...).
