Second the bacon grease method.

Although, I am pissed that the only cheese flavored microwave popcorn that was worth a shit is no longer carried by any of the stores around here any more.

I've never tried it using the stove top method. I don't really like the microwave stuff so I usually air pop. Going to try this though. Time for a trip to the bulk food store.

Air popped is like eating little packing peanuts - lacks the flavor. Cooking it on the stove top the way the OP describe yields the best tasting popcorn.

For something different, you can make kettle corn, or close enough to it using almost the same method, OP. Put your oil in the pan as usual, but add a couple tablespoons of sugar. As the oil heats up, keep mixing in the sugar until the sugar finally melts/dissolves. At that point, add your popcorn kernels & keep mixing until it pops.
