I'm building a computer and need help deciding on a video card. I have Half-Life 2 and Unreal Tournament 2004. I play UT a lot more so I probobly need a card that works best for Unreal tournament 2004 and the upcoming 2007. Which card would best be able to handle this game?

I have an AGP 9800 pro, and it just chugs along with UT. What PCI Express card would be best?

PCI-E will make no difference. Additionally, you should EASILY be able to max out settings on UT on a 9800Pro. What are the rest of your specs? We have no idea about 2007... why would you even try to buy for it. It is 2005 right now!

My new motherboard is PCI Express only, thats why im going with a PCI e card.
The system I currently own is....

Pentium 4 1.6 GHz
Intel Board
120 Gb hardrive and
32 GB
Raiden brand 9800 pro
Plextor 716A
756 MB RDRAM

UT2007 will be out in late 2005 or early 2006 thats why I mentioned that but i assume a card that can run UT2004 really good should have minimal touble with UT2007

Are you sure?

It's supposed to be in 2006 sometime i believe, though the name suggests later.

I run Ut2004 @ Max Settings on the rig in sig (even with my old 3500+), at 1680x1050 and pull max FPS.

If you really want PCIe and UT2007 playability, get a 7800GT, 7800GTX, or wait for the new top-of-the-line ATI chips later this month.

your 9800 chugs along because my 933 p3 probably runs the game better than your p4 1.6...

Thats why I am upgrading to a new system right now. I dont know weather to go with the X800XL or the 6800, I have a limited budget

yah 7800 series will run UT2007 because ps3 and xbox 360 will run the unreal 3 engine fully. And the ps3's gpu the rsx is claimed to be just a tad more powerful than the 7800gtx. Also on pc you can take down settings of course for the smoothest gameplay.

the xl is better than a plain 6800...but we won't know which card will be better for ut2007 untill it comes out.

by the way, both cards can run ut2004 with settings maxed out...

This 2.4 GHz Newcastle 3400+ will do the trick (for only $151 US). It doesn't matter if it's socket 754. By the time socket M2 comes out, you'll probably want that anyway.

The 9800 Pro is enough. Even 512 MB of RAM is enough for UT2004 (although 1GB is better).

UT2004 depends heavilly on the CPU. I also play UT2004. :)

BTW, if you want to stay with AGP and want to run the CPU stock, you can get an Abit KV8 Pro motherboard. They're good and cheap.

Those two things are the only thing you need.

UT2004 is mainly CPU-limited, unless you get crazy with the res and AA (16x12++, 4xAA++). UT2007 will probably stress the GPU much, much more, but not in a way we can predict. I think it's a safe bet you'll want a GF 7-series or Radeon X1-series card, though, both in terms of speed and feature set.

At 720P it will. What is that anyway, like 1280x720 or 1152x720? Anyone run their PCs at that res?

Point is I don't think they've shown the game playing at what many would consider significant resolutions yet.

If you want decent frames at decent resolutions, I would wait. I would wait at least until you see a review and get some feedback about performance.

Play ONS-Dinora or ONS-Shyron @ 1600x1200 with AA & AF, & then try to tell me UT2k4 isn't pretty :)

For an old engine, it compares remarkably well...& some maps, like many of the ones listed here, are simply gorgeous.

Agreed...UT2004 may not be quite as graphically advanced as any of last year's "big three" (FarCry, Doom 3, Half-Life 2), but it's still very nice looking - especially taking into account the engine is essentially unchanged since UT2003's release in the fall of 2002 (Radeon 9700 Pro launch era). :)

720 is 1280x720 which just about the same number of pixels as 1152x864 but with a smaller FOV too which helps framerate. That isn't a bad resolution by any means for a cutting edge graphics engine, and there is always SLI if you want mare.

I thought the FOV was higher (wider) since 720p is 16:9 and wider than 4:3 (16:12)...

You can't really compare consoles to PC parts. Like already mentioned, they won't have the same resolutions, and they simply just run differently. It will have different components than the 7800 anyway.

You can't prepare for games 2 years ahead, either. Might as well save the money by either waiting or getting a modest card for now.

I'm reading this while waiting to play a UT '99 clan match style pick-up-game CTF match with a bunch of others who were disappointed with UT 2003/2004. Let's hope UT 2007 is good.

What card? I started what proved to be a long thread about that a couple weeks ago. I figure that a 6800 GT and above should be able to handle it simply because Epic can't release a game that only 5-10% of the gamer population could play without spending a couple hundred bucks to upgrade.

johnnqq why do you say that the X800xl is better than the 6800, I thought UT2004 was optimized for Nvidia cards so is it not faster with a 6800?
