I really do think you should pay attention to those who say the monitor is the most crucial part of your computer.
It's hard to say what the best thing was for my computer. I like everything almost. And I try to get good deals on 1st hand stuff.

I like trinitron monitors big time.
I like my DSS80 subwoofer.
I like my MS Natural Elite keyboard.
I like my quiet Sony DVD drive.
I like my fuss-free Voodoo3 card.
I like my fast and quiet IBM 22XGP drive.
I like my cheap but capable Olivetti printer.
I like my HP scanner which I am grateful to for adding important content to my website.
I like my case because it has removable side panels you don't need to screw down and I am an inveterate fiddler.
My Freecom CDRW was almost the best and worst purchase I made. Worst in that it was overpriced and went down over the last year or more. Best in that I have made 140 CDs with it, and made backups.

1. Cable modem (Wow!)
2. Voodoo2 12-megger, my first-ever 3D accelerator (Wow!)
3. 10Krpm LVD IBM Ultrastar (9GB) for boot drive (Wow!)
4. Plextor 8X CD-R (started making my own audio compilations - Rad's greatest Hits Vol 1, 2, 3 ..)
5. C300a @464 (killer bang-for-the-buck, P2-450 perf for <25% the cost)
5. Iiyama VM Pro 450 (Mits flatty tube = eye-candy city, I'm an image quality nut)

1. My MS Natural keyboard (original), by far (for a writer).
2. Cable modem.
3. SB Live! Value.

I hope to add to this list soon.

cannot imagine life without my....

ASUS P3BF MoBo
Yamaha SCSI CDRW
Pionner SCSI Slot DVD
IBM keyboard.
SBLive
HP Laser printer

1. Maxtor hard drives(they never die, so sue me)
2. DSL
3. Yamaha CRW-4416
4. Sony Trinitron 200ES

but then, i am also tempted to mention my sc750a... which was modded with 2 side mounted 120mm fans blowing the mobo...

Hitachi 19" (4 years old, still going)
MS Natural Elite Keyboard (3 years old, still love it)
Atlec Lansing 48 (3 years old, still shakes the floor)
MS Sidewinder (3 years old, free after rebate, still using it)
Broadband

Every other purchase that I've made or will make will be obsolete and replaced ~9-15 months, so they can't really be considered the best.

1 - Cable Modem
2 - 24 port 10/100 Netgear Switch
3 - Netgear RT-311 Router
5 - A whole lotta cat 5, ends and wall plates

😀

Of course, anyone will eventually end up w/ 1Ghz or higher power machine, but not everyone fully utilize it!!!!!

Firewire card!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Finally I make my PC work its ass off by doing DV editing. (Got all my home video into collection of VCD)
