Oh and this thread is utterly retarded, since you're dealing with a matter of personal taste :p

No, some people will just be wrong because they have poor taste.

You're all wrong because all beer tastes aweful.
Be a real man... drink whiskey.

To me, the Belgian ales are the best, by far. By that I don't necessarily mean from Belgium, but the styles. Any of the Trappist ales from Belgium are fantastic, and there are many other brewers that brew in the various Abbey Ale styles. Some of my favorites:

- Allagash. Everything they make is great, and they're an American brewery.
- Ommegang. Everything they make is great as well, and they are also an American brewery.
- Victory Golden Monkey. Same as above.
- Rochefort. Probably my favorite Belgian Trappist. The Rochefort 10 is so rich and complex, it might as well be wine.
- Westmalle. Another fantastic Trappist. This one is typically a little more citrusy than the Rochefort, but great body and wonderfully complex.
- Westvleteren. You won't likely find this anywhere unless you're extremely lucky (unless you go to Belgium), but it's out of this world.
- St Bernardus. A Belgian brewer that makes a lot of different ales. The Abt 12 is probably my favorite, but they have a lot of different labels/styles they produce as well. Watou is another great one.
- Konigshoven. Hard to find much of the time, but they make great dubels, tripels, etc.

There are so many more. Explore the various Belgian styles and the various brewers and you'll be busy for years.

HOLY CRAP ... This man knows his Coffee AND HE KNOWS HIS BEER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
I have never had the opportunity to try Westvleteran, however, I will agree that St Bernardus is amazing. The abt 12 is the grandest beverage I have ever been fortunate enough to consume. The St Bernardus witbier is quite good too (I think it has a slight edge over Hoegaarden and Allagash White.)

By chance have you ever tried Ommegang Hennepin?
I picked up a few bottles of this a couple of weeks ago and it is a most extrordinary brew.

Coors = water

I tend to like the German & Irish beers. Warsteiner is one of my favorite. The local brewery here also has a awesome red.

I think to really have a topic on this, you need to stick with commercial beers. A lot mentioned in here are localized and some even made in micro-breweries.

Bullcrap
Many microbrews export their beers all over the place. Just because they aren't a macro, doesn't mean that people won't get to try them.

Absolutely, I agree. St Bernardus also has the Watou Tripel and Witbier which I remember to be just overall a little lighter than the St Bernardus label.

Hennepin is fantastic. I first bought it at Whole Foods a year or so ago, but I had it on draft at a place called Winking Lizard in Cleveland a month or so back. I actually prefer it to some of the other well known Saisons like Saison Dupont. I remember it being fairly light with a good balance of floral hoppiness to spice with a little citrus. Great brews. I LOVE Ommegang, and I LOVE Three Philosophers.

Pretty much everything I've seen mentioned is available at almost any worthwhile beer/wine shop. Granted, some parts of the world don't get as much as others (e.g. it's easier to get Great Lakes in Cleveland than in California I'd think, but that's obvious enough).

Ordinary stores carry ordinary product, and since this thread is about the best and not necessarily what's most easily attainable, I believe it's part of the discussion. If we were talking about the best wine we'd be talking about Romanee-Conti and not so much about Estancia, for example; good luck in finding the former in your average store.

:beer::wine:

[edit]Also, for those not sure where to find some of these brews, you might consider some of your so-called specialty stores. This might include Wild Oats, Whole Foods, and various other specialty farmers type markets. They often carry some of your better known Belgians, American microbrews, etc. At the very least the selection is more diverse. Expect to pay a little more at these stores than your specialty beer/wine shop though.[/edit]

Leine's Honey Weiss.

Amber Bock is good too. Better on tap than in the bottle though.

When it comes to "cheap" beers, nothin beats Leinie's ...... Their Honey Weiss and Red are both great beers and amazing values.
