This one rates very high for me in terms of appearance

I especially love the custom icons and fonts, it has a very cartoonish/comic book feel to it. And the launch bar at the bottom of the screen is the icing on the cake. I would love to do a similar recreation in either Vista or Linux.

I don't mean to be vain, but I like mine the best. LoL!

If I didn't, I guess I'd change it -- which I do (almost) hourly.

EXAMPLE

Here is my current desktop:

Conky is an illness... :awe:

I like Vin's, course I also like mine :^D

I'm a fan of Gnome, and leave it mostly as is. I prefer darker, earthy colors, and that desktop looks like many I use. I generally change my desktop once a month or so.

Edit:
Here's what I'm currently using...

Hey Vin. How did you get the old style panel with the full color graphics? I'd like to get rid of the washed out grey that's come with the last couple Ubuntu versions.

I like mine very much - sorry no screen shots. Xubuntu Lucid.
Vin, what's that system monitor you are running on the right side?
I've always used GKrellm, but I'm open to a new love....

At home I'm using E17 with the default theme and virtually everything hidden, at work here it's E16 setup virtually the same. I like my window manager to stay out of the way as much as possible. The only thing you really see on either desktop of mine is the multiple desktop thumbnails at the bottom and gkrellm.

I tried E17 here a few weeks ago but it didn't handle my dual monitors the way E16 does so I just went back to that for now.

Yikes, the pic in the OP is way too busy for my taste. Vin's is at the upper level of my tolerance. :p

Where'd you find that wallpaper?
I don't remember exactly where I got that, but I use the same method every time.

What I do is:

  • Navigate to Google Search
  • Enter 'high resolution wallpaper' into the form
  • Click 'Images', then 'Any size...'
  • Choose 'Exactly' 1280x1024 (my native res)
  • Browse the thumbnails in the results

Here's a sample search...

That's a simple (but highly configurable) system monitor called Conky.

It's REALLY easy to get carried away with Conky, but I tried to keep it low-key on this machine.

"Just the facts, ma'am!" :D

The fonts are standard, except for the 'Time'. I used 'Radio Space' for the clock...

I'm simply using some customized desktop settings...

Here are the changes:

  • Navigate to System -> Preferences -> Appearance Preferences -> Theme -> Customize
  • Controls: New Wave
  • Colors: Default
  • Windows Border: Ambiance
  • Icons: Gnome
  • Pointer: DMZ (white) -- Size: Small-ish

Simple pimple! :)

Awesome, thanks! It's the icon settings that change that. I installed the old human theme. The new ones are nice, but I like the text centered at the top of the window. I looked into hacking the theme so I could center the text, but my eyes glazed over :^D I might give it a try sometime in the future.

Ram use is minimal, and that's what it's there for. One mans clutter is another's useful information.
