Hard to beat a full sized caddy for the type of drive the op described.

Super soft ride and overstuffed seats make it like riding down the road in a La-Z-Boy.
I was pumping gas at Sears, when my future wife pulled in, with her parent's '68 Olds 98. That was a sweet ride. My grandfather's last new car purchase, before he retired, was a '68 Buick Electra 225 4dr, which road like a cloud.

I've had several full sized later '70s G. Marquis' and Town Cars, and now a '94 Town. I appreciate the new one's nice pillowy ride, yet it doesn't wallow in turns like the old ones. The one with the most marshmallow soft ride, was my grandpa's 225, I guess.

You don't happen to want to buy a '77 Marquis, do you? $100, just pick it up.

i thought you sold it ????

our old mercedes 1985 300SD turbodiesel...

cushiony, huge leather seats, enormous steering wheel, nice audio, nice AC, very easy to drive...roomy. engine was loud, but at highway speed, the noise + turbo-whine was comforting

that car was ideal for road trips; it could seat 5 adults comfortably. it was kind of like a land-boat at 2 tons & 120hp

5 problems with those cars for cruising:

1) seats are SOOOOOOO FVCKING UNCOMFORTABLE. seriously, they are really bad. the rear seats are worse. having the seat cushion wallow around underneath you, PITCHING AND YAWING, but otherwise hard as a rock, is not my idea of comfortable. in contrast, i can sit in any Honda Civic for 10 hours at a time and feel great.

2) steering wheel is so big, i can't turn it without my hands hitting my knees. i'm 5'10", 145 pounds. not a monster by any means. furthermore, the wheel is so big and the ratio so wide, you will be turning the wheel a lot. and when you turn it, the car will only reluctantly change direction, since it weighs 10 tons and sits up pretty high, on high-profile tires. admittedly, it will take a bump pretty well.

3) yeah, it will purr down the road, but it will take 3 hours to get to 80 MPH... and it will overheat when it comes time to climb a hill. and if the engine is overheating, i shudder to think what state the turbo is in. also you have to wait for the glowplugs to warm up before you cold-start it. and when it's cold you will have NO power. you think i'm joking, but i assure you, this car is dangerously slow before it warms up. i can't believe they ever made non-turbo versions.

4) terrible stereo system. first of all, you can't operate it. second of all, you really don't want to, because it sounds wretched. and that's by stock radio standards.

5) terrible climate control. ok, so having automatic temperature control in the 80's was cool. but only if it worked worth a damn. in these cars, it didn't. that leaves you with two manual fan settings: barely there and monsoon blast. better dress in layers.

all that said, they are reliable, can tow, and you can pack a lot of crap into one.

1) Honda seats hurt my butt.
2) You suck at driving.
3) It's a diesel. You can tune the HOLY LIVING FVCK out of diesels without even changing much. Especially turbodiesels.
4) Easily corrected.
5) EVERYTHING I've driven from the 80's; and that is to say, almost everything I've driven, only had those two fan settings.

Guy dropped off the face of the earth. I have the title and keys right here, just need a buyer... and a 20ft flatbed.

Of the cars I've driven, a newer (99?) Volvo 740 station wagon. Leather, heavy (meaning a smooth ride), nice sound system, quiet interior.

The 740 was phased out in 1993...

And while you'd think it was heavy by the way it drove and Volvo's reputation, they were no more heavy than the Honda Accord Wagons of the same vintage. they just sat up higher and had squishy suspensions. The lower-slung Accord weighed the same but was infinetely more capable on a back-road.

740 was replaced by 940 but it is really the same car with some softer corners and slightly updated interior.

My '97 Olds Regency is a pure joy for cruising. VERY roomy, quiet, awesome factory sound, smooth 3800 series II V6, full leather.
Doing 80 mph all day listening to some music.

But for you who haven't been to Europe I can tell you that the hands down best long hauler in terms of comfort is the Citroen CX 25 Turbo II.
The gas hydraulic suspension > * when it comes to cofort. Hit a speed bump at 45mph and you won't even notice it. 😀

I have no doubts it'd RUN that long, but stopping once you get there would be a problem, as would breathing. That and it's unregistered, thus no tags.

I find that annoying.

<--- 2100 rpm @ 75mph

It's great, no need to downshift at all to pass or speed up. Still get 30-34 mpg on the highway too.

My current toy is probably the best cruiser I have been in..my 1978 Ford XC Falcon 500 sedan, it's very comfortable to sit in, it is really easy to cruise in as it requires very little effort to drive, just keep it in 4th and it will do 60km/h all day with out breaking a sweat.
The Fully adjustible Koni suspension is a bit harsh out on the highway..but it makes it up through the bendy bits.
All of the essental bits are in the right place so no effort trying to keep your foot on the acellerator.
It's just a beautifle tame car to drive..but when you jam your foot on it..god damn it turns in to completly different beast!

I would have to say the best car i've driven for cruising is a (UK) 1997-2002 Mitsubishi Galant 2.5l V6-24, especially in automatic. It's a lovely car to drive, very comfortable, but still plenty of power.

Confused

My old '91 Grand Marquis.

Couldn't beat a soccer mom with a boat full of kids off the line.
Couln't get over 80mph without driving it straight down a mountain.
Averaged <15mpg in town and <25mpg on the highway, driving it like a senior citizen.
But some of my favorite memories were in that car. Cruising around after dark with my wife on some old Kansas back roads with the windows down.

I still love my 1988 Mustang GT T top car...
this was the beach cruiser in Florida

open the hatch take off the tops and cruise down Daytona with girls in the hatch and the music on..

and still able to run a 11 second 1/4 =)
