Notebook? Looks like they aren't the sharpest tool in the shed when it comes to making high-density panels...anyway it probably contains a Samsung panel.

Sharp is much more visible in the "other" LCD market (low-res, STN, transflective, etc). I actually believe they still produce TFTs, but no display companies use them.

AU Optronics has a great track record of having VERY few dead pixels in their panels, but the default color adjustments leave lots to be desired. When the panel manufacturers ship these panels in "all-in-one" packages, they include the backlight, and even all the color electronics.

I have to agree!..... got my 20.1" Belinea 10 20 35W P-MVA monitor today, panel is AU Optronics ,colour was out, used the Spyder 2 Express to recalibrate the colours and the difference was noticeable even in DVI mode.

I only had one dead pixel at lower bottom centre, which you can only really see on pure black background ,so I can live with that.I was impressed with the quality of colours/blacks etc..and no noticable ghosting in gaming like TFC....

No real best LCD brand IMHO , as already stated you can get good and bad models from every brand plus different panel types etc.. then you have to add in the chance of getting dead pixels etc.. and you can see not so easy to pick one particular brand of TFT as the best.

My old Samsung 191T LCD had no dead pixels, but my new Belinea is a better monitor in every other way, which is no surprise, but due to newer technology and improvements in LCDs.

Why not another Viewsonic especially since their high-end professional (VP) series is so highly rated. I use a VP201 which is still outstanding even after several years of 24/7 and totally trouble free.

Samsung and Dell are my favorites - Newegg has the Samsung 22"WS for about $390 shipped . Nice IMHO

Im staying away from viewsonic cause i had issues with it from day 1...used it for a year and a half, and then half my screen started flickering..cant use it anymore, so i figured it give something else a shot...dont know if the BenQ will be better, but why not.

If your just into general usage I'd say pick the screen size that you want and go with the best price. If your considering a brand you havent heard about before, make sure you spend some time researching it. Othwerise just about any established brand like Samsung, Viewsonic, Dell, Acer etc etc.. will be fine for your needs.

Heres a good guide that someone linked to one of my earlier posts. I found it very helpful.

Brands don't really mean anything there is only a couple companies that make lcd panels what you really have to find out is good panels than look for the company the only thing the company really does is make the casing. though I am not sure about the backlight....

Westinghouse is that in name only (under license). Isn't that a K-Mart (and related companies) house brand?

quite true. I only voted for NEC because I love the 70gx2, 90gx2 and the 20wmgx2. All are excellent lcd's, if you have the $550, get the 20wmgx2. It is an 8-bit panel and has superior colour reproduction to any non gamma panel, save maybe the pro lcds such as eizo nano and lacie 321 lcds.

I voted for BENQ because they are always on the edge with new launches and they have good prices and QUALITY .

But you forgot LG ... I'm not a fan of LG but I've sold a lot of LG LCDs and Iim happy with the quality and with the price .

Now ... I think LG has the best offerings on the market ...

Monitors with 2000:1 Contrast and 5ms ... and a 20.1" one costs only 305 euros .

I think now LG HAS to be included in this top .

Samsung - Vertically integrated - cut out the
middeman, let the engineers concentrate
on engineering - that's the way to manage
technology development !

I just wanted to let everyone know, I got my BenQ 20 inch wide screen from Buy.com today. The monitor is nice, but I have to admit I liked my old viewsonic more.. This screen has glare if looked from a certain angle...i like the deal i got on it...but this is def not the best monitor on the planet.

It's a Dell XPS gen1 that was given to me and yes it has a sharp panel in it. It was made in 2004 and back then the Samsung panels actually had lots of bleeding issues.

There are alot of flawed posts on here pertaining to LCD quality.

First off brand is not as important as specific models of LCDs.

Second, specs (ie contrast ratio, response time) should be taken with a grain of salt. For example Dells are rated at 16ms, while they are still faster than 8ms rated panels out there.

Third, for panel quality you should look at the panel type and go from there. Which leads to my fourth point.

Lastly you cannot compare the value of a TN panel to a higher quality panel such as S-PVA or S-IPS. It doesnt make sense to say a certain TN panel at $280ish is a better value than an S-IPS panel than Dells 2007fpw.

You arent paying below $300 for a high quality panel, theres a reason Dells 20 inchers are >$300.

Now this is not to say TN panels are bad, I'm just saying that you cant compare two different grades of panels and say the TN is priced reasonably and the S-IPS is not.

I'm planning on the Acer AL2416WD 24in Wide-Screen. 1920x1200, 1000:1, 6ms for $740 just because I want the biggest screen I can get without spending too much. Anyone have any experience with this one?
