another great, great album. But not really "rock".

<---grew up in the 80s when cure bunnymen, love and rockets ruled. As far as I can tell there really isn't an alternative scene nowadays.

The only other really great alternative rock I can think of is sound garden. Man did their first two albums rock serious ass.

There's this one band that was really incredible - "hey, now, hey now now, this corrosion to me.....like a bleeding heart....hey, now, hey now now." dang can't think of them now.

teh google roxors....

I agree that the definition of alternative has changed. Besides the Cure, what pops into my head is New Order (I love True Faith), Violent Femmes, Ramones, Modern Talking. The type of music we also used to call New Wave

What saddens me is I've been hearing Nirvana and other bands of that day being refered to as "classic alternative" more and more. It's making me feel old :(

If you were 20 something when nirvana hit you are old.

<---old.

If you were 20 something when the greatest band of all time (Led Zepplin) came out, its official-confirmed-old.

All these cd's previously mentioned are great. I like Alice in Chains 'Jar of flies', REM, Weezer, The Used, Switchfoot, Dashboard Confessional, Garbage etc.
Hard to put a finger on who's greatest. I'm not sure if Disturbed could be considered alternative but I like them as well.
A million others I can't think of.

The Colour and the Shape was an excellent album from start to finish. I'd put SP's Siamese Dream and Weezer's blue album up there as well.

Just beat me to it. I totally agree.

If you're going to go with Stone Temple Pilots I think Core is the best by far..

You are very sadly mistaken. Purple is the best. Admittedly, Core is very, very close, but it's not Purple.

Not the best of the 90's, but I can listen to Bush - Sixteen Stone all the way through to this day.

Well I like their hard rock sound better. I got my Core CD stolen a while back, and just to change things up I bought Purple to replace it, but was somewhat disappointed.

Ten by PJ was good, as was jar of flies by Alice in Chains (if it counts).

Course I always liked the debut album from gin blossoms
smashing pumpkins - siamese dream
Forgot that one. You're right, it's better than any other mentioned here so far.
Stone Temple Pilots - Purple
WTF. Their quality dropped from the first one, which was SUPERB.
as a Canadian - I'll mention Our Lady Peace - Clumsy as my favorite
Good album, as was I Mother Earth - Scenery and Fish, which I'd easily argue was better ;) Of course the tea party's "splendor solice" trumps both of them, hands down.

I endorse the selection of garbage. Hell, there's a lot of good sh*t out there.

Heck, Barenaked ladies Maroon is a stunning creation as well.

I've always liked Facelift better than Dirt. More rock, less gloom, same attitude. One of my top 10 favs albums of all time.

It's all about Jars of flies I tell you! Who could not literally be stunned at the beautiful beginnging of no excuses, or the fantastical melodies of rotten apple?
