I've always liked Facelift better than Dirt. More rock, less gloom, same attitude. One of my top 10 favs albums of all time.
It's all about Jars of flies I tell you! Who could not literally be stunned at the beautiful beginnging of no excuses, or the fantastical melodies of rotten apple?
:p

Originally, AIC was a heavy metal band. Facelift reflects this, with the Motley Crue-esque "We Die Young" and the metal sound throughout the whole album. That's why I didn't mention Facelift as "the best alternative rock CD ever". Because it's not alternative rock, it's heavy metal with a really edgy attitude. IMO it's like the final statement of '80s heavy metal before it died, and what a statement it was! And how appropriate that it was made by a band that was later grouped into the "grunge" phenomenon that killed '80s heavy metal.
After Facelift and before Dirt was released, Nirvana broke Nevermind and the whole grunge thing began. In the meantime, Staley dived into a needle, and Cantrell decided to experiment with a darker sound now that metal was no longer in fashion. The result was Dirt. It's a fantastic album. I just prefer Facelift.

I still say Ten as the best alt rock CD ever because I was there, in Seattle, 20 years old, when alt rock broke in the form of "grunge", and while the rest of the country was hung up on the heroin hicks from Aberdeen, Pearl Jam was the rage.
