I went through several choices in my head when i was thinking about this. Nirvana-Nevermind? Naw. Good, but not GREAT.

The obvious choice to me is Foo Fighters-The Colour and the Shape

What are your thoughts?

I love the Colour and the Shape...truely one of the last "raw" produced albums. 1997 was a great year...I wouldn't say it's my most favorite alt. CD, but it's probably in the top #3

Yeah, "The Colour and the Shape" is a great album. I'll add Nirvana's "In Utero" and "Nevermind."

Nirvana is alternative music nowadays? The definition sure has changed from when I was in high school and alternative was stuff like The Cure, Echo and the Bunnymen, Love and Rockets, and bands of that style. If that's how you define alternative then the best album is Depeche Mode's Violator.

does Green Day- Dookie count, or is that too punk?

led zeppelin is not alt-rock. i think nirvana is the earliest candidate for alternative.

The musicscape has changed so much in the last 15 years. Looking back, you can find so much 80s stuff that got rolled into punk or pop that was really alt-rock before its time.

These days, it seems like there's only three four genres left:
Rap
Alt-rock
Classic rock
Country

There's also R&B, Religious, Classical, but they're stuck in the back of the store with the porno and blank casette tapes.

EDIT: Fourthed on The Colour and the Shape. So many great hit songs off that CD...

Green Day - Dookie ...too punk??? Please...a great album but it isn't "too punk".
Joy Division - Closer .....gotta agree with that album....as well as Depeche Mode - Violator.
Tons of great albums to choose from......unlike the crap thats out these days

three-way tie between the following:

Cake - Fashion Nugget
Weezer - Pinkerton
Beck - Odelay

1996 was a great year for music, IMO :) Odelay was released in June of that year; Fashion Nugget and Pinkerton were both released in September of '96. the sad thing is that I never really got exposed to any of it until I was in college 4 years later and dated someone who was super into alt rock.

I agree Zep is not alt-rock, which is a term that really started with grunge. Earliest candidates are the Mudhoney's or Pixies.

As for the best I really don't know, so many greats, but I'm partial to Nine Inch Nails, Downward Spiral. Nirvana was the most important, that would be real tough to argue.
