What's the average weight a person can expect to lose in a week?

I'm talking trying to lose as much as you can even if it's unhealthy. Is 10 lbs possible? How about 10-15 lbs? This is with a significant cut in calorie intake and jogging 1-2 miles everyday for that whole week.
 
I don't think you'll get anyone here to recommend you to lose weight that ridiculously fast. Even if you did manage it, the day you decide to indulge yourself will be your undoing since the weight will just jump back up.
 
I've lost 9 pounds in 4 days before to be 10 pounds under my weight limits for entering the air force (just to be safe). Probably could lose 15-20 in a week. There's no way you could sustain that weight, or continue losing at that rate though. Also, depends on how heavy you are. Why are you trying to lose weight? I wouldn't recommend more than 3 pounds a week of actual fat/muscle loss (as oppose to water); pretty sure most here would suggest less than that.

If you try to lose 5+ pounds in a week, you will a) be starving and lethargic, b) have left over skin flab that will last you the rest of your life, c) yo-yo your weight because you want to do things quickly instead of making a lifestyle change, and d) be unhealthy because you'll put your body under stress that isn't necessary. Read the fat loss sticky posted at the top of these forums. To avoid these things, you should try to lose 1-1.5 pounds per week. You will be able to eat well, not be hungry, and not have a ton of left over skin. Also, isn't the point of losing weight to GET HEALTHY? Why would you risk your health to lose weight then? If you do something like this where you lose a ton of weight in a few weeks, you'll gain it all back later because you won't be prepared to create healthy eating habits.

To even entertain such a question, you would have to provide the current weight of said person. Losing 10 lbs for someone who's 400lbs is easier than losing 10lbs for someones who's 150lbs.
 
on the ultimate fighter I think they said some guy had cut 17 pounds over 24-48 hours.

I forget what weight class he was but it wasnt heavyweight. It was welterweight (170), middleweight (185) or LHW (205)

sweat suit + cardio and when you are not doing cardio you are in the sauna in your sweat suit


but remember that is all water and they are gonna gain it back


you want to cut fat not muscle

losing muscle and fat at equal rates will make you look the same at best and most likely worse and that is what is gonna happen when you try to lose more than 2 pounds a week.

What's the point of losing water weight? You can't keep that off for more than a couple days anyway.
 
Yep, seriously pointless unless you're trying to make weight class for a competition in which case you're busy hydrating as soon as you step off the scale.

SC's right about the roughly 1lb a week figure. That's sustainable and healthy. While you may be able to drop somewhere in the ballpark of 10lb in first week of a ketogenic diet, that's unsustainable and is largely water weight.
 
I think I did around 7 but that was hardly eating anything and (ab)using diuretics. I wouldn't recommend it. Its mostly water weight anyways.
 
1-2 lbs being healthy. I can lose around 8-15 lbs in 2 weeks following phase 1 of the southbeach diet hardcore no cheating. You have to keep at it regardless of the way you diet or else you will put it right back on especially if you take it off quickly. Good Luck
 
It very much depends on your initial fatness. Unless you're flirting with < 12% BF right now, it's certainly more than the rote "1-2 pounds per week." Let's assume you're an average American male fatass of average height, I'll pull a number out of my ass and say you might lose 11.34876 pounds that first week.

For maximum change on the scale, it's tough to beat a ketogenic diet. By burning through your glycogen, you'll dump 5-7 pounds of water right there. Can't really recommend an outright fast for very long, it's not going to go well for you unless you're hugely fat.

Check out the PSMF. Lyle McDonald wrote a fairly thorough e-book on the subject. It at least attempts to hang on to some of your muscle tissue.
