I heard a couple of commentators predict that Scotland will withdraw from the United Kingdom shortly.
I thought that issue was gone.
Is there something to the rumor?

For the sake of argument, let's say the choices were to allow this, or to have a war with 100,000 killed between England and Scotland, resulting in Scotland remaining in the UK.

For those who oppose their right to secede, would you choose that war? If not, how do you defend the US civil war which killed several times that many for the same basic cause?

If Scotland decide to leave the union then they will leave, there wont be a war about it

Where the hell did you got that idea from?

He's just trolling for the cause of the American South like a good Dixiecrat. ;)

The situations aren't analogous anyway. The Scots didn't join the UK willingly, they were conquered over the course of centuries. Plus, they're planning on keeping the Queen... so it sounds to me like they just want to get off the pound and get the North Sea oil.

The partition of Ireland. The American Revolution. The Indian Mutiny. The conquest of Wales. The English have a rich history of violently imposing their rule on others.

LOL. You really think Britain would go to war over this?

Use your head for one moment and remember how long ago those things happened and how the world has changed.

lol, talk about worst case scenario.

There is absolutely no way it would ever go to war. Even in some bizzaro world situation the government wanted to take that route there is no way the British public would let it happen.

The Queen desires peace.

Elizabeth desires peace?

She declares it to me, I swear it. She proposes that you withdraw your attack. In return, she grants you title, estates, and this chest of gold which I am to pay to you personally.

A lordship and titles. Gold. That I should become Judas?

Peace is made in such ways.

Slaves are made in such ways! The last time Elizabeth spoke of peace I was a boy, and many Scottish nobles who would not be slaves were lured by her, under a flag of truce, to a barn where she had them hanged. I was verra young but I remember Elizabeth's notion of "peace."

Hard to tell what scottish means. Is it the Celts that own Scotland or transplanted Irish?

Romans claimed it was theirs for a while too.

I am obviously no expert on Scotland. Some of my relatives were Scotch Irish. In our family history there is a warning to beware of the Tyrany of the British.

Anything that may weaken the British is a good thing for the rest of the world. They just need to go all-out and remove the war criminal Queen.

I've heard this before, but prior to that I had no idea that the Brits had any sort of ethnic balkanization today ala Canada and Quebec. What are the Scots so unhappy about?

Rome never reached Scotland. Scottish is celtic and germanic (vikings and other tribes came in waves). Sutherland is a place in Scotland which means south land, and that gives you an idea of some of the Nordic heritage. Irish are more celtic than scots.

Oil matters hugely to Scottish nationalists, and most experts assume that, with the North Sea oil fields in Scottish waters, Scotland would get up to 95% of UK oil reserves, and nearer half of the gas.

I don't need to read beyond that. The UK won't let it happen. It won't come to war, that's just silly but if you think any industrial nation is going to lose almost all of its oil to some state leaving (analogous to Alberta trying to leave Canada), you're living in a dream.
