Count me in as a Sony owner (17" 200ES Trin).
Sony makes very nice monitors, usually with lower refresh rates that other monitor makers out there. The picture quality usually makes up for this, but this is my warning: Sony monitors, and any Trinitron monitor will most likely have a number of geometry problems. Some of the newer monitors have advanced controls to help with this, but older models (such as mine) don't have some of the advanced geometry controls to fix this. Bowing, flickering, and even dull corners are common symptoms of a poor Trinitron display.
3D performance is extremely important to me, but lately I've found that Hitachi, Samsung and Viewsonic monitors are some of the best out there with a decent 2D video card (ie, G200, G400). I have a TNT2U which I obviously bought for 3D a while back, but will probalby go with Matrox and a Eizo, Hitachi, or Samsung display for my next video purchase, simply because of the near perfect geometry, crisp 2D, and support.
The G400 is an excellent monitor with interesting specifications, but all of you Sony owners, let me ask you to do this: call up sony's technical support number on any given night and tell me how long you wait on hold. They'll usually tell you only 1/2 as long as it'll be (they say 20 min, it will be at least 40). I've called up their support more times than you can imagine. I've had my 200ES 'repaired' 4 times now, even though each time it came back it was worse than the time before. Amazing, eh? But it doesn't stop there. I wasn't going to have a monitor that was incredibly blurry and flickering all the time, even after 4 repairs, so they EVENTUALLY agreed to send out a replacement, but they wouldn't cross ship, so I sat here for 3 WEEKS without a monitor as they took forever to ship the replacement. This monitor is pretty damn good, except for poor geometry (bowing). Sony also doesn't like to pay for shipping. I had to beg to tell them this wasn't my problem, but theirs, and they should pick up the monitor and ship it back. Somehow they thought it was MY problem? OH yes, I forgot, I broke my monitor on purpose? 😕😕 It was about $15 to ship the monitor out, so go ahead and calculate 5x$15. Yes, it adds up. This is all because Sony's "repairmen" don't know how to do their job, or are trying to give me the runaround. Not a good job, Sony. I won't buy from you again.
Their support is a joke. I hope you don't get a bad Sony monitor. If you get a good one, you're lucky, and probably have an EXCELLENT display, but god forbid something go wrong on it. Btw, my experiences with Mitsubishi and Viewsonic support have been excellent, and my friends have told me the same for Samsung. They are prompt, honest, and ship to YOU.
