Common sense would tell me the 175 is better at OCing but I just wanted to check with you guys and see what you think! Thanks

Every CPU is individual. Someone may get higher overclock with 175 where someone gets higher clocks with 170. You never know unless you're buying a pretested CPU.

zebbo... most people when they ask this is based on AVERAGE of the chips taken from a given sample size.

I got my 170 up to 2.5ghz, it wont go any higher. The 10x multiplier on the 170 is nice and easy.

The 175 should be easier to OC because of the higher multiplier (it puts less stress on the mobo). But the prices difference isn't worth it, if you're getting one, get the 170.

get the 165. it'll reach the same speeds and cost much less.
my own 165 (and most everybody elses) get upto 2.5 easy.. 2.6 is a bit more difficult cuz of voltage. higher keeps getting harder.
many 165's get to 2.7...2.8 qand that about the limit for amd's dual cores. even the fx-60 can't go higher than 2.8
also what mobo are you getting. get a dfi for OCing.

I'm getting the DFI Ultra-D... I know hte 165's are good, but I have heard the 170's/175's OC better... and my real concern is which will OC better the 170 or the 175?

I'd get the 170, 175 isn't worth the extra money. Main thing is to get Opty 170 over 165 and 146 over 144. The lowest models are speed binned with the worst chips from the whole lineup. That's why there's some 144s that crap out at 2.7 and some 165 that crap out at 2.6. Get the next step up, 146/170, and you'll be good. 175 is overpriced, screw it.

What motherboard will you use? If you have a DFI ultra or something as good you can just go with a 165. Your better off with a 175 or 170 if you have a cheaper motherboard.

It would help if I could read. I would go with the 165 if it was me. If you can get the 170 for just a bit more then go with it but no way would I get the 175.

165 is best imho, cost much less=same performance as chips costing 2 times more(when both are overclocked).

I'm getting the DFI Ultra-D

So should I go with the 170 or 175?

So please let me get this straight- the 170 will OC as good if not better than the 175?

I also recommend 165, i got my Opty runnign at 2.56 @ stockvoltage, next will try 2.7 @ 1.4V and see how it turns out

Well, i guess it does depend on the individaul chip, but an 165 will run 2.4GHZ (300*8) without much of an issue, given that you have a good main board

I personally prefer the 250 HTT, since it gives a nice 1000 Hypertransfer bus, but i remember somewhere that the bus doesn't matter when it's over like 800 or so....can some one confirm that?

Your corect. It doesnt matter. 800 is fine. Anything over 1000 and you may have stability issues

ebay. Check and see what tankguys.com have for sale. I doubt they have a week 30. Youll probably pay so much on ebay that its not worth it. Just roll the dice. Worst case you should get 2.5-2.6

look at the near bottom of the page...under "stepping info" says the 170's of week 30 were really good.

good luck

week 30!?!? How on earth do I know if I am getting one from that week?

Get a time machine? haha jk, yeah, its the luck for the draw, all we can do is provide info on which weeks are doing good.

I just got my Opteron 170 from Monarch which i ordered 2.16.06 and its a CCB1E 0550 VPMW

but i have no way to clock it yet cause im waiting for the 580 MB chipsets by ATi. I hear the Asus one doesn't give above 1.65 vcore voltage meaing people with Opterons have a low ceiling for clocking.

Yeah I wouldnt even think about going to 1.65 on voltage. 1.5 is as high as Ill even think about going. 1.45 is even better.
