What's an acceptable FPS for you?

First off, my specs:

512MB PC3200 Corsair (2-2-2-5) soon to be 1gb this monday
6800GT@ultra speeds
3.06P4@3.4ghz
ABIT IS7 MB with PAT emulation on
DX9C

Now, apparently I should be able to play farcry at 1280x1024 with 4xaa/8xaf NO PROBLEM. The problem is I can't. I find the FPS to be simply HORRIBLE at parts and completely unacceptable, even with SM 3.0 pathing on. Just to make sure I had everything in order, I went to the nvnews forums and ran their benchmark program and compared it with other systems. I got 1-8FPS lower than the amd 3400+ with a 6800ultra in it on most benchmarks. Ok... so everything is installed correctly.

I find that if a game drops below 40FPS for an extended period of time, it really irritates me. I think maybe I'm too sensitive or something. I read all these posts about people playing in these insane res's with system specs similar to mine and I just go "wtf are you going blind?" The human eye is not supposed to be able to tell the difference at anything above 60FPS and I'm finding this to be pretty much true, but any below that and I can really tell a diff, and it bugs me. It makes me worried even more about Doom3, since I'm looking forward to this game. blah blah enough rambling, what do you guys think?

after playing a particular game for awhile, I'll sometimes check FPS.. I find that I will usually get between 25 fps and up, which are totally playable for me.

FarCry's FPS drops are most likely attributed to your having only 512MB RAM. Try playing those parts again after you get your second stick. =)

fps >= 30

The human eye is not supposed to be able to tell the difference at anything above 60FPS
That's a VERY COMMON misconception. Some people even believe 24 or 30fps to be the limit. It's not true. The limit to fps is probably around 300fps.

300? I can see maybe 100, but 300?

I also got 2x 256 for dual channel so I'll be using all 4 slots. I was going to sell my current ram which is the same kind and get 2x 512 but I'd end up paying more because nobody wants to buy the ram T_T I guess I'll sell it all in one big chunk when i want over 1gb

Yeah the ram will make a huge difference. Personally I'm very tolerant to low framerates. I'm partial to single player games and RPGs, and so the strategy is more of a lure to me in a game than the action itself, and no 12 year olds will have "pwnt" me (olololololol) if the low framerates kill me, since I don't play multiplayer. I'd prefer good image quality AND framerates, but I'll generally make the compromise between the two much farther toward the IQ end of the scale. I play FC in 10x7 with all settings on very high on my stock-speed ti4600, no aa/af. Framerates get pretty bad in parts, but I don't mind it too much.

I definitely know what you're talking about man. I HATE playing any game where my average framerate is below 60. I can definitely tell the difference between something like 40fps and 75fps. This is probably why I am able to play a game without FSAA because I'd rather have the game play smooth and still look good despite the jaggies. I mean if I play at a high resolution like 1024x768, then jaggies aren't that apparent anyways.

In my case (running a 933 P3) after using my computer for 5 years with 256mb I finally got another stick a couple days ago.

I feel like I have a new machine! (although it can't compete with ANY system in these forums...I know I know, im poor :( )

50-60fps or above is generally where I'd like to be, although I don't often get there in FarCry with my 9700 Pro. However, I have a 6800GT on the way to take care of that problem.... :D

That's exactly what I'm talking about. You're going to see huge dips in farcry even with that card.

i can live with it as long as it stays above 30, after about 45 it's all butter to me.

Zero prob w/30 FPS min. ;)

See, I couldn't deal with that.

What makes you so special?

I don't know :(

i see.

Well, i'm pretty ordinary - but i do like to game (for many years since Pong). i think FPS becomes more of an "ego" thing than a practical consideration most of the time for most gamers. If a game is really good, you won't notice the OCCASIONAL slowdown - for me, 30FPS is an acceptable minimum. ;)

If there's a game like Serious Sam, where there's almost endless enemies, some AI and pretty good scripts running, a slowdown can really disrupt enjoyment. OTOT, in Thief Deadly Shadows, where YOU are moving so SLOWLY (and actually stop just to admire the scenery and the lighting), a drop to below 30FPS might not even be noticeable.

Somewhere ~25FPS, is where i start to get annoyed and begin to play with res or details (8x6 is too low for me; 8x11@85hz is the best my Samsung 955DF will comfortably do - 12x10 gets ~79hz). If i had a hi-res LCD, i'd have to bet a better card than my 9800XT.

I like 300FPS; i'll SETTLE for 30 as a min - any less, and i think of upgrading.

I am sort of sensitive to this and like to have 60 or higher at most times, with a minimum of maybe 45, and can't really stand anything lower (in FPS games). I am usually ready to turn down the graphics until I can attain these framerates.
