What's After Democracy?

I believe Marx thought that communism was the next logical step. Basically one or two groups will eventually gain all the power and band together to bring on communism. We studied this last year in Political Philosophy and we went through the different stages and who thought what should follow what. It was pretty well thought out. I'll see if I can find my notes and maybe post what some people thought.

none . . . really. ;)

However, it doesn't stop our current administration proclaiming our 2 party overbloated bureaucracy a "democracy" (after all, there is "some" choice).

Democracy has been tried - the US came pretty "close" in 1776 . . . :)

So - anyway - what's likely to replace it.

EDIT: Communism can be RULED OUT. It is a Failed Experiment . . . great Idea but too "Utopian" to succeed (on this planet, anyway).

you mean socialism?

In a large country withpolicy based on polling the masses, socialism will always be a strong element of the result of governance. i.e. the poor majority will take more than they put in via taxes.

Be careful not to mix up your terms. "Democracy" literally means "of the people." Many countries call themselves democratic. Former East Germany called themselves the GDR - German Democratic Republic. (Deutsche Demokratische Republic or something in German, I forget). The Soviet Union was democrat: they elected their leader. He just had to be a member of the Communist party.

Both socialism and communism are (also) both pretty much "failures" as is everything else that has been "tried" as human forms of government.

A "successful" form of government would benefit all its citizens.
(never happened yet)

What are political analysts saying about possible future forms of government?

This is MY point really . . . ;)

ALL forms of democracy are subject to abuse (our own has a problem electing the most "popular" instead of the most "qualified").
(actually - ALL forms of human government are subject to abuse)

So, what's next?

Maybe . . . the most efficient form of government is a dictatorship. However, dictatorships are notoriously subject to abuse of power by a single man (or group of people).

A BENEVOLENT dictatorship might be ideal - HOWEVER, once the "benevolent dictator" dies - it's back to bad government as "usual" and often "anarchy".

Democracy - as visualized by America's founding fathers - had a lot of checks and balances to keep abuses in check. These are currently breaking down.

Everyone want's "ideal" - for themselves. :p

WHAT I want to know IS what "you" think is the NEXT form of government to succeed "democracy"
(is this too "difficult" a concept to extrapolate or "project" future government possibilities?) :p

We tried Democracy (or at least something closer to it) with the Articles of Confederation. Democracy has already been replaced with the Democratic Republic.

WHAT I want to know IS what "you" think is the NEXT form of government to succeed "democracy" . . .

Let me try some examples . . . Gene Roddenberry is projecting a type of government by United nations - a benevolent and fair-minded federation dedicated to upholding the individual but subordinated to a 'greater good'.

Frank Herbert in his Dune series, projected an EVOLUTION of humankind that creates a nearly immortal godlike "benevolent" dictator that guides mankind in his vision of destiny for thousands of years.

Islam militants are projecting a jihand and eventual planetwide rule by Allah as expressed by them.

Christian Fundamentalists are looking forward to Jesus' return and Theocracy (or so they "say")

Whaddaya think?

We will return to a Dictatorship. The dictator will not be human. It will be a computer that looks at all the issues and makes decisions on the basis of who benefits the most and is harmed the least.

That sounds a lot like the book Player Piano. Giant computers controlled everything, and the president only served as a figurehead to make the masses feel like they were in control. In reality, he had no power, and society was reduced to a bunch of people using the output that the machines created and fighting wars alongside the machines, sort of like The Matrix except coexisting with the machines rather than being used for energy.
