As for the "Kohler's are the best" comment. Ummm. No. Kohler is currently just living off their name.

While Toto is doing the same thing based on 3 yrs ago. They definitely raised the bar then but there is not a noticeable difference now.

Umm. No.

When I remodeled our old house I put in 3 new Kohler toilets. I'm not talking cheap ones either. Every one of them had a problem or problems.

One had a flaw in the porcelain that was causing leaks. It was replaced. Replacement had a faulty fitting in the tank that caused it to constantly run. It was replaced. Replacement for the replacement again had a porcelain flaw that caused a leak. It was replace with a Toto.

The second Kohler would not flush worth a damn. Take a piss in it and you were ok, but even a small amount of "solids" and it would clog every damn time. Never replaced it since it was in the 1/2 bath and not used for anything other than taking a piss once the flush issued became all too obvious.

The third Kohler had a combo of the two issues above. Wouldn't flush worth a damn, ran constantly due to a flaw in the mold when it was made that cause the flush valve to fit improperly. It also had a pinhole leak in the trap. It was replaced. The replacement fell apart, literally, 2 months after it was installed. Came home one day to a flooded house because the tank had separated into 2 pieces. It was replaced with a Toto.

Luckily I sold that house so now they remaining non flushing Kohler is no longer my problem.

New house were are building is 100% Toto toilets and sinks. I'm not about to spend $600,000 building a house only to not be able to take a proper shit in it because the toilets have constant problems.

i love all the random, yet important things you can learn on ATOT. now i will know what toilets to look for when i buy a house like 5 years from now.

Not just a toilet... a FERGUSON. The King of bowls! Sit down. Let me tell you the story of the Ferguson. Now these babies were made in Maine, you know, at the little Ferguson factory. It's the Stradivarius of toilets. And my Dad could play it like a violin.

Yup, I'll never forget the time my dad took me to Maine to visit the factory. I had to go to the bathroom. And I begged him to pull into a truck stop. He said no, wait until we get there! It'll be worth it! It was!

good to know your isolated incidents trump years of experience. Thanks for the lesson

The fact that Kohler toilets are consistently a hard-spec in even commercial applications, while Toto is rarely found or accepted, proves otherwise. Your experience is unfortunate but I don't feel it should be presented as the rule

Our toilets would be much better without all the restrictions.

The new dual flush systems are getting better results.

You really can't go wrong with a Toto...however the price is much more than many want to spend on a toilet. If you are looking to drop $300+ then most toilets will be pretty decent.

Average builder specs toilets are all in the sub $100 range.

I loved our Toto Drake and it cost around $250, it was worth every penny.

They are worth it for those that rather not deal with the inconvenience of repeated flushes, clogs and noise. In my $300+ figure I figured on a new line, ring and incidentals.

I have a Kahlon and American standard in my house, they work well but the one is a round toilet which I hate. When I am done painting and getting the house dialled in (only been in a little over 6 months) I will upgrade at least that one.

Another vote for toto. My family has installed several brands of toilets in our homes and toto has been consistently good as of late. We also have the toto bidet toilet seat - too gimmicky for me but it does work. You have to be careful these days because some toilets can't do the job with the 1.6 gpf regulations.

Im not going to argue with you about the porcelain flaws, that should never happan. But a tank cracking in half sounds like you overtightened the bolts. Did it crack around a bolt hole or what? The not flushing worth a damn is usually due to the wax seal being smashed into the drain hole causing flow reduction. Did you pull the toilet and make sure the wax isnt blocking flow?
