Whats a good PVP centric MMO?

I think 'normal' MMO's are kinda stupid. But PVP centric MMO's like Darkfall intrigue me. However, i hear they don't have as many players as before. Are there any really popular ones (or any that are coming out)?

I don't care if it's RPG or FPS, i like both genres.

edit: Griefing is a big part of the reason why, but not the only reason :D

Best game I have ever played: http://store.steampowered.com/app/17020/?snr=1_4_4__13

Global Agenda - An fps in a persistent world that is focused primarily on 10v10 instanced missions and Agency vs. Agency 10v10 gameplay. There is a few hours of open world play and instanced solo/4man pve, but those can get old.

There is a free trial, and if you try it make sure you try pvp out at level 10. Was on sale for $7.50 ( no monthly fees either) but it seems like that deal is over. You can buy it from their website with a 50% off coupon for $15 as well.

That game is boring as hell, even the people in the former Goonsquad (who used to dominate EVE) said so. They literally played just to grief people, which, while one of the reasons why i'd like to do a PVP centric MMO, the game mechanics are still bad and boring.

Yeah, i thought about it, but it's technically not MASSIVELY multiplayer though (the PVP part anyway)...

I just got an email from the old Lucid Vision folks(a PvP-centric guild) from Everquest saying they were going to Rift until The Old Republic comes along. That does not mean they think highly of Rift for PvP, only that it's what they've decided to occupy their time with waiting for other things.

Have you tried Age of Conan? I have no idea how the population is now, but it was a big-time gankfest when it launched.

Very true. Only MMO I have played that wasn't boring as hell. It is a lot of fun to go blow up people.

EDIT: I read the OPs response, and wonder if he ever played the game. The game mechanics are far better than any other MMO I have ever played. Of course I felt that most MMOs were just boring grinds with crappy game mechanics. Eve doesn't feel that way at all.

Ok, so are you guys saying that Eve is fun without joining a corp?

I actually sorta wanted to play before but then Goonswarm disbanded and even their members readily admit the only reason they played is because of the griefing/social aspect. I loved reading some of their exploits, especially how they screwed over BoB. But in terms of the game, they jokingly refer to the game like it's doing paperwork or homework.

There's lots of potentially fun things to do in EVE without joining a player corporation, but PvP is essentially a group activity and that means joining a corp is very, very useful. Almost a necessity. If you know a group of PvP'ers in game, you could join up with them from time to time, or even all the time, and not actually be memeber of their corp or alliance, but that really doesn't give you much over just joining up with them. Few people get far with solo PvP, so if that's what you want EVE isn't likely for you.

I'm not sure why you're fixated with Goonswarm but they were only only one small part of PvP in EVE and only for those years when they were actually relevent. There's other styles of PvP than what Goonswarm did. There's the more standard 0.0 sovereignty warfare fighting over terriory with huge fleets, much the same as the Goons. There's pirates in low-sec fighting newbies, the odd daring mission runner and other pirates. That seems to describe most of the EVE players here on these boards. You can also declare war on corps in high-sec, or just suicide-gank valuable haulers or mission runners. There's also semi-structured faction warfare in low-sec.

I don't know if any of that would appeal to you, but EVE is a big giant sandbox game with lots of possibilties. None of that PvP stuff appeals to me, but I still have fun playing game. You can play the game for free for two weeks to get an idea what it's like and I'm sure there are plenty of people here that'll happily give you a buddy invite for a three week trial. The trial is very unrestricted, there's not much you can do in your first two or three weeks of a regular account than you can't do in a trial. You could've even signed up with Goonswarm, not that they would've accepted you.

Hmm... otherwise have you tried Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning? It's got a decent trial, no time limit, but a hard level cap. Almost counts as a free-to-play game.

I don't like pvp much, but in case it helps:

There's Planetside, which is supposed to be just that, an MMO FPS.

Dark Age of Camelot's specialty was 'realm versus realm'.

Guild Wars has a lot of PvP MMO-type gameplay.

A WoW PvP server might fit. IMO, the PvP gameplay is better than many say.

The P&N forum here might work, if they ever filter out some idiots.

I'm fixated on goonswarm because i'm a registered goon on the somethingawful forums :)

But yeah, the only real appeal to me is that they made other players cry and intentionally wrecked the game for them. I dunno, a lot of them say Eve is boring otherwise. I guess the cyber-sociopath element sorta appealed to me, but I hear the new reformed Goonswarm isn't really as 'vibrant' as the old one.

Everquest pvp is great. In fact on an emulated server I played with some of the Lucid Vision people and they were supposedly major hackers both on the emulator and live game. Even 12 years later and on an emulation the pvp battles get very intense.

WoW. No other MMO approaches it in PVP balance.

:awe:

It's not an MMO but if you want a solid, pure PVP experience give Bloodline Champions a shot. Arena only, very small download, excellent balance and design.

Goonswarm is among the last people to ask about Eve, considering how much they troll.

Eve is more or less the king of PVP centric MMO's. There is NOTHING better than knowing that most likely you caused someone to cry by killing their extremely expensive ship. No other game allows you to punish someone for being dumb so much.

I made those two cry. They were just finishing the last NPC battleship in the cosmic signature, and I uncloaked and pointed them. Then after killing them, we finished the anomaly that they did for us, and made about 200M ISK from their wrecks and the site. It was nice. They sat in their POS and just watched as we took everything they worked for :)

That falcon came in and tried to save his buddy, but was unsuccessful after I sensor dampened him. I found out why he was sacrificing the falcon when I checked the drake wreck. Completely faction fit. It was a good haul for a little work.

EVE +1

Get a corp and don't be antisocial. Even if you just play a few days per week, plenty of corps who don't care as long as you tell them your a casual player. Some will even give you ships for free if you join fleet. Tackler or scout role is fun to learn the game. Its a good game and miss playing it.

Never played these but I heard some decent things:
DC Universe
Warhammer

Cheers,

I'd prefer something 100% PvE. I'm tired of developers releasing patches that ruin the games trying to make them balanced for PvP.
