So they say that you should eat some carbs some hours hours before a workout to get some energy to maximize your weight training.

Right now, my schedule has been that I get home from work and eat dinner by 6:30 to 7:00. I then head to the gym to lift weights and try to last for 40 minutes to 1 hour at around 9:30ish. I do this 3 times a week.

My dinner hasn't been carb heavy. Chicken Breast, and various veggies (spinach, asparagus, etc etc). I know I'm pretty weak, but I wonder if it is also the lack of carbs that is not giving me the energy to last through the workout.

What type of carbs should I be eating on those workout days to make sure I maximize my workouts? I read the sticky and I know to avoid the white and enriched stuff. Is it just as simple as a couple of slices of whole wheat bread or 1 serving of whole wheat pasta? I want something that is low in glycemic index too, if I can. and how much grams of carbs is okay?

What do you guys eat?

If you're weight training, it doesn't really matter. Timing it doesn't even matter. Post-workout nutrition is more important. For a pre-workout meal, you could probably eat it anywhere from 4 hours to 30min beforehand. Eat a normal, well-rounded meal - fibrous carbs, lean protein, some healthy fats. It's different if you're trying to prepare for hard cardio though.

Sweet Potato w/butter is what I use. A little honey drizzle for carb kick if I'm doing aerobics for extended periods. After the W/O I drink 1 cup of milk and/or maybe a little greek yogurt.
