What's a good DX10 showcase game?

I just finished installing and setting up Vista Ultimate x64 the other day. Bioshock looks somewhat better, Crysis would look better if it didn't run so much worse that I have to knock more settings down, ditto for Lost Planet.

What should I try out to see how purty it can be?

Maybe there's a tech demo at ATI/Nvidia that will show off the comparison to advantage, but no game currently looks markedly better or runs markedly faster in dx10 over dx9. Performance wise its actually backwards most of the time.

I know the performance is much lower, but I figure for everything that's not Crysis and Lost Planet I should be able to run it at or near max in DX9 anyway, why not see what DX10 offers? 30fps doesn't bother me.

None of them, because DX10 offers basically 1.5 new effects that can't also be done in DX9.

The main advantage of DX10 is more efficient code for the same effects, meaning a likely performance boost and the possibility of using more effects simultaneously.

So far... Hellgate: London and Call of Juarez are the only suggestions where the graphical enhancements aren't artificial AA-withholding from DX9?

Wasn't SupCom supposed to go DX10? Did that not wind up happening?

Into filght sims?
Then the FSx is the ticket.
In DX10 mode even my rig (very similar to yours), this game will make my rig cry for help.

No, I have no interest in flight sims 😛

Definitely similar rigs though. Practically identical aside from the OC (mine stopped being stable at 3GHZ when I upgraded to 4GB and I need to tweak stuff and see if I can get it back up)

Mine is 4gb dram and 650i mobo.
I do use an A/C hsf for the e6600.
I did o/c to 3.6 stable but back down to 3.4 for longevity.

maybe 650i OCs better than 680i LT?

I think it's mostly just tweaking the voltages for stuff other than the CPU, or I just got a non-overclocking-friendly mobo/CPU/something.

Call of Juarez. It looks great in DirectX 9...but its absolutely stunning at max settings in DirectX 10. Every time I got killed it was because I was busy walking around gawking at the trees, bushes, sky, rocks, etc.

I maxxed out the graphics on Hellgate London DX10 at 1920x1080 on my 42" Plasma HDTV and it looked fantasttic. Unplayabale 😛 but fantastic.

Back in Novemberish 2007, the DX10 performance was poor and buggy but the difference between DX9 and DX10 in the game is night and day when comparing roughly equal settings.

FSX's so called "DX10" mode.....for laughing out loud. Please dont get me started...even the developers admit that it flopped.

We could debate a few nights now...please do me a favor and turn on DX9 mode and look at water...and then look at the "great" rendering of water under DX10. (Assuming all settings on high)

Under DX10 the water looks WAY, WAY worse (imho)..except that DX10 features that the water now reflects the environment..but the implementation just was way below what users expected after the developers released those mock/fake "DX10" preview-screenshots. There's a reason the developers called their DX10 implementation "preview"...since its really not more than than.

So...what? DX10 blurs environment textures?

It's all I notice. It's using the same settings.

Looks like they've got some better rendering of clouds too from those screenshots. The sky looks about 25x better in the DX10 shot.

I doubt that's DX10-specific. Just looks like they've toned down the bloom a bit in DX10 mode.

I've looked into Call of Jaurez, and yes it does look much better in DX10...but it looks like that's because they replaced a bunch of textures and models for DX10 mode. I have still yet to see anything where a game *looked better in DX10 because DX10 was doing something DX9 can't* OR a game *looked the same in DX9 and DX10 but ran noticably better in DX10.*
