*shrugs* I suppose that all of us that LIKE the dells just happened to get good ones? I mean I keep hearing people bitch about the dell monitors and I guess I am just not picky enough for a little light to bug me that much. I have seen some of the BAD backlight bleeding people talk about and it is bad, but then again I have seen what some people consider backlight bleeding and it's crazy how little they are talking about.

I have the Gateway 21" Widescreen monitor & absolutely Love it! If you can fit $600 into your budget, I think you'd be Very Pleased! You can get it at either Best Buy or Staples.

BUT

the best 20" widescreen is now the NEC 20W(M)GX2. Compared to Dell 2005FPW, it has (a) TV functionality with HDCP (US version), (b) better response time (a clearly visible difference in games), (c) usually quite good backlight (bleeding problems seem rare).

People who say that Dell 2005 is "by far" the best 20" widescreen, apparently have a poor source of information since the NEC is the top dog right now. Its glossy panel is not everyone's cup of tea though.

It depends really, if you factor cost and availability the 2005fpw may very well be the "best 20" widescreen."

Also, I don't think you can get the Belineas in the US at anywhere near a good value but I haven?t looked in awhile so that may have changed.

As far as backlight bleeding problems go, you have to remember 2 things.

1. Every LCD *right now* has backlight bleed to some extent. Some people you see bitching do not know this, so their expectations are not set properly. Maybe they are coming from a CRT, maybe they read another post about it on a forum and just never noticed it before ~ monkey see, monkey do, maybe they don't have the slightest idea how to do even a rudimentary calibration on a screen.

I have 7 LCDs between work and home, of these a 2005fpw, a 2405fpw, apple CD 20, and a prior favorite the Samsung 710T. The 2005fpw has the LEAST backlight bleed out of all panels, with the Apple being a close second. Maybe I just got lucky on that one *shrug*

2. The 2005fpw is a VERY popular choice right now. This may be another reason you see so many posts about it. It has a higher install base with the "tech forum" crowd that most others.

I beg to differ...I have a 17" Dell with no bleeding problems, a Samsung 912N with no "and I mean no" bleading problems. I have tried 4 different Dell 2005's, and everyone had a bleeding problem that was not acceptable. I'm now running a Gateway 2185 and while the edge lighting/bleeding is cured, it suffers from some dithering problems...especially in games. Of the last two, the Gateway is by far the superior monitor, although it costs almost twice as much when purchesed with a 3-yr warrenty.

The colors on the Gateway are superior to the Dell, but the Dell of-axis is better. I have been trying to find a NEC to look at but I can't find anyone with one in stock...and I don't want the Apple Cinema as it's just too much money.

To finish this off though, I will not go back to a 5:4 ratio monitor again...once you have played and worked on a widescreen...it's hard to go back.

NEC MultiSync 20WMGX2 = best. It's the fastest desktop LCD right now. It also has the best viewing angle of any, and colors as accurate or better than an AG CRT according to measurements! The only drawback is the price (well, there's no height adjustment either IIRC).

I've been following this monitor on here and the widescreen forum but $700 is a little out of my range

Ditto. I played FEAR onit recently and I didn't notice any blurring or backlight bleeding, and the blacks are very nearly really black.

I considered that monitor, even thought it looked great [at office depot]. But I read on WSGF that it had some gradiant issues. Not sure if that's even a noticable issue, but I'm quite picky about anything I'm spending any great amount of money on as I'm not planning on getting another monitor for quite some time.

I'm not exactly sure what you mean by gradienting. Do you mean a shift in colour displayed from top to bottom of the panel? I haven't seen anything like that on mine, but I know that I'm not that picky about some things like that.... so...:p

I am also another proud owner of the Gateway. I love the colors when set to the recommended settings at FiringSquad, and I haven't noticed any blurring or backlight bleeding what so ever. I recently upgraded from a 17" Samsung 712N that I loved, but the extra screen space is amazing. Battlefield 2 looks amazing in widescreen with the details cranked up.

/whine mode on

Not the only drawback :( It's also so small if the game doesn't support ws :( And the glossy panel :(

/whine mode off

Seriously, the reasons listed above are deal breakers to me. If it was 23" 1920*1200 non-glossy, I'd be using it right now. Otherwise, looks like a great monitor.

Argh, that's what I'm looking for too, dar. The Sony P234 is looking like the best option, I think. It's S-IPS for speed, supposedly good color and black levels, and 1920x1200 on a tight pixel pitch. Price seems to be only drawback? (And of course lack of input options aside from VGA and DVI-D).

I think he is talking about a dithering problem, and it does exist on this monitor. If you look at a bright object, say a flashlight in a game you will notice banding or dithering around the source...it's very noticable and a killer in my opinion...I would be more comfortable with some edge bleeding. This is not common with all PV panels, but I just took my Gateway back due to this. My old Dell 2005 didn't have any of these problems...just way too much edge bleeding to be acceptable...and by the way, I was one of the few that tried 4 different monitors before I gave up.

Here is a link to a site...the top image should have no "banding" effect from left to right...The Dell and the NEC do not have any noticable banding, but the Gateway does...try it out.

I do see a bit of vertical banding on that image, but I have to focus steadily on it to see that.

See sig..

If you can afford it it's unquestionably the best... it's the next gen IPS .. (the old ones were used in Dell 2005 these guys are recommending but they are caught in a time stasis) has everything the 2005 has but brighter, whiter, blacker, 2 x faster and higher contrast. I own both.. NEC blows Dell away.

seeing as the NEC runs for about 700 and you can get the Dell for about 400 easily.

So? The Dell could cost $100 and I'd still get the NEC. It's that much better..

The stand on the dell kicks ass though!

12 ms on/off, 8 ms g2g (here, I'm not sure, the spec sheet just says 12 ms but the press release said 12 ms rise/fall and 8 ms grey-to-grey, which I tend to believe)

Too bad I don't like its appearance :p

Arrrrrrr you did'nt tell me about this when I was looking:(

I would have gotten that instead of NEC.

I saw this monitor after you had purchased your NEC. I would've told you, of course.
