What's a better workout?

Regularly, I do one of the following two, OR both:

- Go to the gym, run 2 miles on the treadmill
- Walk 3-4 miles with my 15-20 pound back pack on (if I feel like skipping the subway)

If I did one of these on one day and the other on another day, how am I faring on weight loss/calories/cardio? Obviously running makes you *feel* better, but is running 2 miles really all that much better for you than "hiking" (I say that because of the weight on the back) 4 miles?

Workout B doesn't involve much cardio since I doubt your heart rate reaches a high enough BPM
