i'm hoping the e6700 and 2gb ram is enough to run vista and be able to at least browse the web. i guess i may have to upgrade to 8GB ram and quad core if i want to open microsoft word.

That's my thoughts... Vista will be a total downgrade for me. I'd probably have to do a complete reformat. Plus alot of my games that I play about every day don't work on the latest Vista beta release so I'm not too hopeful. Gonna give it a year. (DX10 games will take a while to release anyway).

My upgrade will consist of 1 item:

Windows Vista, if and only if it keeps DRM under control and starts to become necessary for me to use certain software titles. Few on these forums don't have PCs that will run Vista just fine. Now, will I upgrade my PC....sure, but it won't be to run any $#&% OS. I'd love to stick with XP as long as I can anyways.

wanting to UPG from my current sys (see sig) to C2D, for NOW planned 2GB mem (Vista !) but i think 2GB might cut it close, figure Vista full blown w/ all services and games like Crysis....ugh.... and G80 or R600. ANd OC the **** out of the C2D, means i again will need quality parts again and no junk.

edit: still not sure whetehr i actually want Vista x64 or x32.

x63 is nice, i have it on another partition right now (AFAIK rev 5744 or something)..but then if it WOULD turn out that x64 will rather be a niche-thing and one or the other incompatiblity...i MIGHT just stick with Vista x32.

But then...SHOULDN'T x64 be totally downcompatible with x32 ?

Quality doesn't mean expensive always. you can find good deals if you play it right.

same here... I see no real benefit to Vista at this time, especially for the money being charged for it...

I'm not into all the DRM crap that MS is forcing with it either...trying to avoid it as long as possible. I kinda want my system to be my system and not have to have a registration for everything.

Won't even consider Vista until after SP1, so no need to upgrade for it. Have an X1900 AIW and a 9NPA+ to take the place of my X800 AIW and Neo 2. With AIW production ending, I had to switch to PCI express before I wanted to.

I'm sticking with XP for now. No need to upgrade, and I am not one to adopt a new OS soon after it is released. I can't afford it anyway.

I will upgrade my system but not for running Vista. Games are going to have good support for DX9 for at least a year.

Windows Vista isn't *that* much of a RAM hog. I just helped my mate install Vista RC1 on his laptop - a mighty 1.8Ghz Mobile Sempron, 768MB RAM, and integrated X200 graphics. Granted he only scored 2.0 in the "Windows Experience Index" he was still able to smoothly run the Aero interface. Obviously he isn't going to start trying to play games on it, he never did with XP anyway (he's dual booting).
Once I've got my laptop fixed (dieing mobo I think), I'm gonna install Vista RC1 on it and see how it goes with 512MB RAM - which I will probably upgrade anyway to 1.5GB later, but I want to get it fixed first :)

Upcoming games will mostly run better on Vista undoubtedly provided you have atleast A64 system/Intel HT 3.0GHz class with 2GB RAM.

However to fully unless the power of Vista you obviously need C2D or C2Q with 8GB RAM DDR, that will make day to day work snappy as well.
