what you all upgrading to when Vista comes?

I've done my upgrade - from a Athlon XP-m 2600+ to a Opteron 165.

I did it as much so I could record 2 SD feeds + 2 HD feeds at once as I did for Vista. From a HTPC point of view, Vista is a must have for me. I got in on the X360 Extender beta test and have been playing with it since Beta 1 but I've been using it on my HTPC full-time since RC1. RTM is supposed to be released tomorrow and I'll be able to finally download the X64 version and hopefully purchase my ATSC tuner in the next week.

Total cost of an upgrade minus selling old components is going to come out to around 300 bucks, including the ATSC tuner but not including a copy of Vista. The RTM will probably be good up until May and then I'll buy the upgrade version from MCE 2005.

So here's what I went from to what I have now:
Athlon XP-m 2600+ @ 2.2ghz -> Opteron 165 @ 2.4ghz
Abit AN7 nForce 2 board -> ASUS A8N-E nForce 4 board
128MB Radeon 9600 Pro AGP -> 128MB Radeon X1300 PCIe
160GB ATA133 8MB Cache Maxtor HD -> 320GB SATA2 16MB Cache Seagate

It's not actually in use yet, having just got all the parts in, but it's all assembled and I'll pair my Hauppage PVR-500 with a Cats Eye 164e when they become available.

All that Vista req is gonna push tons of upgrades.

considering my old dtr notebook can run it smooth as silk (2.8GHz P4, 1GB PC3200, mobile Radeon 9600) I doubt many ATers will need to upgrade to run Vista - upgrade to play Vista games, yes, but not for Vista itself.

gaming will be better on vista with the same rig for newer games provided you have a very min of 1-2GB RAM dependent upon the game and settings.

Yeah, in six months to a year (from now).

i'm hoping the e6700 and 2gb ram is enough to run vista and be able to at least browse the web. i guess i may have to upgrade to 8GB ram and quad core if i want to open microsoft word.

LOL!

Why do sheeple rush out to buy an OS anyways? "OMG it looks so pretty!" I use an OS to run my apps, not as an end to itself. Once it has proven to become necessary (as in most new apps requires it) then comes time to upgrade.

Although I will be purchasing Vista, I do not plan on upgrading my pc for it. I have other things I need to save money for these days, and my pc is more than powerful enough to handle anything now or in the near future that I would want to throw at it. On an off topic note, I still don't see the reasoning behind all of the Vista bashing. If people could get past the childish attitude of bashing the big thing because they think it makes them a rebel, they could see that Vista offers quite a lot of nice things over XP.

Although I'm impressed with the technology, there are next to zero applications that can take advantage of it. As far as Vista is concerned, you would think people would have learned over the years that buying an MS OS on release is not a wise decision. Don't you remember how messed up XP was? It had so many security holes, my phone was ringing non-stop (I do IT work on the side). I'm building a new system in December. Maybe my next system after that (2 or 3 years), I'll download Vista.

I'll be dual-booting 64-bit Vista Ultimate with XP SP2, though I probably won't switch entirely to Vista for year or so.

i will be upgrading my self esteem by laughing at all the suckers trying to figure out the endless problems with vista. :beer:

Upcoming games will mostly run better on Vista undoubtedly provided you have atleast A64 system/Intel HT 3.0GHz class with 2GB RAM.

However to fully unless the power of Vista you obviously need C2D or C2Q with 8GB RAM DDR, that will make day to day work snappy as well.

You don't need that much RAm. That quite came from some asshat on some forum who was bashing it stupidly.

well haerd some people are getting it just to play Allen Wake, but of course those are rich people.

I predict that game to suck horribly. Visuals and special effects never make a good game.

Rather, they make a good game better. Meaning, if the game sucks it sucks no matter what fancy smancy cover it has on it.

Isnt AW the successor of Max Payne II, from the same finnish guys ?

If YES...this game WILL be the bomb since those people are geniuses when it comes to game-engines !

Or do you want to say that MP II was a bad game ???

ANd OC the **** out of the C2D, means i again will need quality parts again and no junk.

Quality doesn't mean expensive always. you can find good deals if you play it right.

nope..already checking out stuff and reviews.

Btw i DEFINTLY would run vista as soon as it comes out...WHY ?

First i already have very good experience on my pre-release vista on the other partition, and this is even x64....but i really dont have any major complaints or whatsoever except that i need more memory

I'll have a 50% discount for Vista Ultimate.

So I'll buy it at a reduced price, but I might not install it the same day though. I might just keep using Windows XP until I clearly see that Vista's critical bugs and security holes are fixed. One thing is for sure though is that as long as buying it goes I will, the day of its release. Nothing forces me to install it afterward.

Yeah, it's from the same people that made both Max Payne, and Max Payne 2. I have both, and I love them, but it definitely seems as if Microsoft has bought them out. According to their website: link, it will only be available for Vista and the Xbox 360.

There's no way they'd do that, when nobody has Vista yet, unless they were being paid very, very well to do so. I mean, people who are in business usually don't go out of their way to slice their own throats.

Ditto.
Agreed.
Yeah.
What he said.

I am in no great hurry to switch to Vista.

I'll be using XP as my primary OS until i am forced to switch because of games, etc.

I will have Vista as dual boot most likely though, likely soon.

Why not save the $140-200 and just not get Vista, if you're hurting for money.

Sure it does, but ultimately it comes down to the purpose of an OS, and that's to let you run the applications that you want/need.

People are arguing over Vista (pro and con) as if it were a religion. Guys, if you want to do that, other people have been there/done that. It's called Apple products. Oh no, it's not just simply a tool or device. It's a lifestyle choice!

At least more of you around here (probably being more tech savvy than most) can quote a couple of reasons why you'd want to do the upgrade. Typically when a new MS OS comes out, less savvy people often give me the reason that "it is new and better" without being able to quantify the "better" part (newer, it is).

Before upgrading, I will ask myself the question, "how will Vista improve my personal computing experience?" So far I don't have $140 (or whatever) worth of answers.

As i'll still be a computer science student for the next two years (though I'm out working this year as part of it) I should hopefully be able to get Vista for free through MSDNAA, so I'll probably upgrade fairly soon after it's released / available on MSDNAA. I'll use a new HDD though so that I can keep XP in case I have any compatibility problems with Vista.
