What would you use to take notes in class besides paper?

I'm going back to school this fall and can't decide if I want to use my pocketpc with a keyboard or if I just should bring my laptop to school.

Thanks for your advice.

I'd probably want to take a laptop if I could.
I reckon I can type quicker than I can write.

I thought that I would use my pocket pc and keyboard to take notes... But I always ended up watching divx movies or playing games. That was after I got over the feeling of embarassment of taking it out during class. So in the end paper is best :p

<-- would be too embarrassed to whip out a laptop in a large lecture hall... unless everyone else does it (law students).

It depends on the type of class. There's no way I'd try taking chemistry/physics/calc notes on anything other than a legal pad. History and crap like that I guess something else would work, but I never took notes in those classes anyway.

That's what I did mostly. I'd write down the odd note or two.

Unlike many of the other idiots....errr.. students that spent more time on the writing and formatting of their notes than actually listening to the lecture.

My only class that would require hard core notes would be Chemistry this year. Maybe I'll just stick to plain ole paper/pen.
The idea of bringin my ppc would be cool but I probably would be better off trying to listen to the lecture more like Amish mentioned.

Anyone who thinks they have a photographic memory and can remember little / never-before-known-facts and retrieve it from memory 3 months later, please quote and reply to this.

I did this in law school - it was quite common even when I was in school 5-7 years ago. The thing is, I think there is a real educational value in transcribing and reformatting your notes into an outline, a step I was able to skip, so I am not sure it turned out to be the most effective technique I could have used.

I take a laptop with me to all of my classes, it's great. I've seen some people use a palm pilot with a keyboard attachment, which is fine but you don't get very much line width. A laptop lets you take awesome notes because, like Don Vito said, you can organize your notes into an outline as you're taking them.

Same here. It seems silly to be embarrassed about it.

But its more than enough to stop me. Pen and paper all the way.

I can't, but my classes rarely required it. Most of them had a review the day before an exam.

I take a MD recorder along side my laptop. Works well for me. FSCK being embarrased about using a laptop if no one else is. I can type MUCH faster than I write and it's more readable. And if it helps me keep my 4.0/4.0 then what do I care what other people think? It's MY money I'm paying for classes in the first place, I'll do what I want.

I used to bring a laptop, until I found out the joys of having Alphabet soup during lecture!
