as a wife myself who has had recent issues with furniture delivery, i think you're in the right. your wife should not have gotten all pissy over a delivery charge, especially when the store could have attempted to combine shipping and made it cheaper. case in point: i bought a buffet from macys a few weeks ago, and my husband, three days later, bought a sofa. not only did we pay on separate credit cards, but they also waived the double delivery fee (would have been $140) by giving us a discount on delivery.
and since i'm a newlywed, i'm still awaiting a bunch of furniture items from another furniture distributor, including my bed (we have the mattresses but that's all), headboard, mirror, and nightstands. only after 8 weeks did we receive our dresser and chest. we're also waiting on a curio-hutch type thingy for the dining room. all of that being said, since there's such a crazy delay on the items, the guy at the furniture store completely waived delivery charges on subsequent items that are still being waited upon, and it appears that there will be 3 or 4 more delivery attempts until i get all the items i paid for. (with the dresser that arrived last week and the curio coming next week, we still have to worry about our nightstands, the bed, and the mirror. it is truly aggravating.)
you are in the right for standing up for what you think is proper. if the guy thinks he can pocket his extra $45, he's wrong. it's good that you showed them.
i say that the 25-year-old manager is probably a newbie and doesn't have a clue how to succeed in this business.
