I have had experiences that fustrated me at hotel & gas station similar to that befor.
One tree planting trip during my college days:
My best friend, a friend & I arrived @ a small town near Golden, Northern BC. in my Corolla station wagon full of equipment after a 14.5 hours drive. We were tired hungry, low on gas & it was 11pm.
There were 2 motels in this town and only one was open @ this time. We pull in the parking lot next to the flickering pink glow of the vacancy sign and all got out for stretch.
My best friend & I when to the office to book a room for the night & was turned down. The clerk refuses to give us a room claiming that it is full/no vacancy. I pointed out to the clerk that the sign said vacancy and he apologized to us and turned off the sign. Luck wasn?t with us when I ask the clerk if we could pitch a tent on their parking lot for the nite, because we are too tired to drive & is out of gas. The clerk told us that we couldn?t park or pitch a tent on his lot for the night. Grudgingly, we back out of the office?as we were leaving a couple in their mid 30s walk in and ask for a room which was presented with a key. I turned back to the clerk after he finish with the client and ask him why he gave the couple a room and we can?t get one, and there are 3 set of keys still hanging on his key board. He told me to get out of his office and promptly call the cop to remove us from their lot. Angrily we walk back to the car and I was steaming but was too groggy from lack of sleep to think up of some thing to get back at the bigot.
We drove to the closes rest stop and park the car for the night & was rudely awake, and told to move along @ 1:30am. I was tired and wasn?t in the mood to deal with the RCMP, so I drove a way from town to find a loging road to park for the rest of the terrible night. At 7am we drove back to the same damned town to find some food, and found out that every shop, restaurant or gas station take cash only and we only have bankcard & credit card, and the only bank doesn?t open until 10am the next day. Angrily we check between the 3 of us and scrounge the car floor & parking change tray, and come up with $11.72 (still remember that vividly after 12 years) to last us for more than 24 hours. We used $5.00 to fill the car, because it was running on vapor/empty half way back from the logging road. And we use the rest of the money to purchase bread and some wieners.
We now have a little food, no money & not enough fuel to escape this rotten town. After we got some food in our gut and was thinking a bit more clearly, I drove back to the gas station. We asked the attendant if he would give me a full tank of gas and in return hold my $200.00 Seiko watch that my mother gave me @ grad for ransom till I get back there in 5 weeks and paid him. He refuses even after we told him our dilemma, he was kindly enough to told us to go to the other hotel, because he know the owner & they are much nicer people to deal with. We thanks the gas attendant and followed his instruction to the old motel that he clerk/operator/owner was kindly enough to take us in, fed us & even give me a $50.00 cash on my credit card.
After surviving that dreadful experience my friends & I vowed, and told everyone not to stop at that town?and if they have to spend it, go to the nice out of the way old motel because the people there is nice and need the money. The funny thing how reverse prejudice can happen when you feel repressed. We were thrown out of an East Indian Motel, because they was prejudice against tree planter (dirty & rebel rouser image), and was take in by a kind old couple that very likely hasn?t seen many Asian in their life. There was about 1200 people in the town & about 400 are East Indians, and the rest are redneck loggers.
Sorry for the long story.
