What would you do if you were drafted?

I enlisted for 4 years active duty and then did another 4 in the reserves (U.S. Army Infantry).

I have great admiration and respect for those that I served with and the job we did. Though it was "peacetime", nearly 400 guys in my brigade lost their lives in accidents, such as the Arrow Air disaster.

I'm very conflicted about it now though. Those that do the job today still have my esteem, but I cannot imagine any of my younger friends that I'd wish to see put in that position apart from voluntary subscription according to their own convictions.

if i was recalled, i'd probably be sent to a training facility since i am "old", but if they needed me on a sub , i would go and we would kick some enemy ass

People said the same thing leading up to and during every war we have fought.

maybe vietnam and the koeran war. i can't imagine anyone crying foul for the world wars.

then again... i don't recall the vietnam war and the korean war having good endings. i doubt this one will end anytime soon, and with a positive outcome. they can't find any WMD and there are worse tyrants than saddam elsewhere in the world right now. i just don't see any reason for bush to invade iraq. besides they never did really finish off afganistan, and i think kosovo is acting up again. so what did bush do? blame the CIA for the wrong intelligence...

i just don't find the war in iraq to be justified, and so do many other countries around the globe.

Housing is not free. Living in the barracks doesn't cost money, but once you get a house or appartment to yourself, you pay for it. Free? BWuahahahaha - I got news for you, bud. You gotta buy LOTS of stuff in the service. You want a dress uniform? You buy it. You want a second set of fatigues? You buy them.

Unless you can hide your athsma or you have something that doesn't effect you much like allergy-induced athsma, you won't get into the service with breathing problems.

Your pay depends on what position you hold in the service. Housing is not free. Living in the barracks doesn't cost money, but once you get a house or appartment to yourself, you pay for it. Free? I'm living in an apartment right now that the Army is paying for via Basic Housing Allowance......it's actually more than what the apartment costs as they give you a set amount based on rank and location. Also, I hope you mean rank when you refer to "what position you hold". I'll agree that you have to buy lots of stuff....but you can DX them and they give you clothing allowance each and every year buddy. Are you in the service right now?

You don't offend me. The fact is it is true. Many people were against entry into WWI. The sinking of the Lusutania (sp?) and Germans unrestricted submarine warfare were listed as reasons but the Nye report concluded we enetered because it was in our best interest to help Britain. They owed us a little over 2 billion dollars. Before the sinking of the Lusutania people considered it to be a European affair and something we should not get involved in.

WWII was really started in 1939. We stayed out of things again because it was a European affair. Again we helped out Britain but only after the US was attacked at pearl harbor, It wasn't until then that Germany declared war on the US.

It can be argued in both cases that being proactive could have saved millions of lives. Our isolationism allowed for both wars to happen. I would think however that if we would have attacked Germany or Japan prior to the US population seeing what ended up happening we would be seen as tyrants even by Europe.
