eh 30k isn't too bad, I'm looking at a similar job that starts at ~30k and after 6 months bumps up to ~45k as long as I'm not a failure. Its a govt job tho, and it's 'temporary' which means they have 2.5 years to decided if they want to keep me as full time or not.

They have 2.5 years just to decide if they want to keep you?

"So it's been 10 years that you've been with us. Unfortunately, we've decided we will not need your services after all!"

Sounds like they are doing it just so they can say, "No one was willing to work in this position. Let's hire someone with an H1B visa."

30K lmfao who could Afford to live on that???

Humm, the salary of the job is starting @ 30K and up, NOT exact 30K.

Another thing, median salary for a US family is about 50K/year. That includes a husband, a wife, a kid or two. All that for 50K and people still able to live.

I made less than that when I was fresh out of college (years ago) and I was able to live normally.

Not really, it's a temp position that can only last 2.5 years. At that point they have to decided if the extra position is required to continue doing business or if they think they will be able to get by with 1 less IT guy around. Apparently a year ago they let the last guy go, 3 months later they started looking for another temp guy. Between them being VERY slow and not having much luck with a few other guys I guess this position has been open for the majority of this last year.

There are a few good things about the job, first off the benefits are great. Secondly it's considered a student position, which means I get to finish my BS and they 'have' to work around my school schedule as long as I'm able to work as much as they decide they need me there.

I figure worst case, I'll get most of my BS done and get paid decent. actually it's very good for a college student around here. And it's some industry related experience I can put on my resume for later rather than piss ant nothing jobs that I've had in the past that have nothing to do with IT.

Around here probably 60-70k. Basically a junior support person as mentioned. A jack of all skills, master of none.

Haha, you really like to inflate your numbers. Try looking at the recent Watson Wyatt survey and reassess your claim.

Entry-level IT positions will always suffer from too little pay. Why bother paying them higher and fairer wages when San Zhang from China or Apu Singh from India will do it at dirt-cheap wages?

Are you a lead or a jr. administrator? Maybe they want you to be familiar with all that and work with a more experience tech... then 30K may not be so bad. If they are expecting you to know it all and do everything... then 30K would suck.

Probably a little low, but the job isn't requiring expert level knowledge of anything so depending on the benefit package, it might be fair. They ask for an A+ or Network+ and nothing really above that, and that tells you the job is probably fairly basic.

There is no way that job is a $60K/$70K job. You're in Louisville/Lexington, right? I am in Indy (fairly comparable cost of living) and a job with that description might fetch, at most, $40K and even at that would probably require some defined years of experience and probably a degree.

people are out of work, so i guess they can demand the absurd and get someone who just will fill in while looking for something better.

shens to the max. prob around 35-45k here at NYC, more on wall street but won't be more than 60 with bonus included and they will want a college degree. but u don't even need a college degree to do that job, even high schools are offering CCNA class these days.

And we wonder why we outsource so many jobs to India...

People are unwilling to take decent, above average wage jobs that require about a years worth of post high school training to learn the basics of.

ausms info says he lives in chicago.

good luck living in chicago on 30k a year.

10%+ sales tax.

gas rarely goes under 3 bucks a gallon.

rent on a 1 room POS is a grand a month.

I do almost everything on that list, and will make 50K with my overtime(which makes up 10K of it) this year. And I live in a place that costs 33-50% less than chicago.

I certainly wouldnt dream of taking a paycut to go do it there.of course, I also worked about a month+ of extra hours to get my OT pay.

I would hope 30K is the starting for someone thats knows a few of those things.

agood working knowledge of server and cisco stuff should be worth more than 30K

you can make more than that shoveling assphalt 8 months out of the year and sitting on your ass the rest of it.

Sounds also like this person would be doing all the support.
Which means they're always on call dealing with things like the server going down at 1am and it taking until 6am to get it up and running, going home and getting a call at 8am because the sales guy's laptop got infected with a virus from downloading porn.
Add in being on call 24/7 and suddenly 30k seems less and less.

sorry to break it to u but you're working in the wrong places in nyc.
mid level help desk can pull $80-90k in financial firms.
