Probably nothing, unless someone saw you. Most people probably wouldn't notice, or think anything of it if they did. If they did you'd be charged with something equivalent to 'unlawful discharge of a firearm'. There's also a VERY small chance that the returning projectile could injure someone.

It's small, but real. And I think that it shows enough irresponsibility that anyone who fires into the air should be punished rather severely (exceptions obviously made for things like duck hunting).

Oh it has happened, albeit only a few times out of the likely tens of millions of rounds fired into the air. Anyone who discharges a weapon without cause, or in an unsafe manner, should face penalties.

How far up does a bullet go before returning back to earth?

I never knew bullets came back down... I always just assumed they'd break out of the atmosphere and go to like Mars or something.

I'd get arrested.

I'm in a burb at the very edge of a metro area. Very quiet here, even though I'm 4 miles from the major airport (just about nothing flies over the house).

those pesky underwater bullets

Yeah, I've seen some cool videos of a Glock 18 with the maritime package firing. They are nonlethal at a very short distance.

Around here if you live in the city you get a ticket for firing a gun inside the city limits, pay the fine and go about your business. Chances are they will just tell you to not do it again. If you live in the county they won't do a damn thing as long as the bullet doesn't come down and hit anything and you weren't doing it to intimidate someone.
